Fine. Maybe you are using 9.04.

If I'm supposed to take your word for it or the countless users posting to Launchpad, I'll take the Launchpad posters, thanks.

I was told that 'accelmethod' "should be XAA but now I'm being told it should be 'EXA?'

Xorg.conf now has nothing in it so I need to copy/paste specific settings? Why is it this hard? I don't see why Joe user is supposed to do all this. I know XAA DOESN'T work in Ubuntu since I just tried it (I copy/pasted settings I found in the forums) since someone was saying to change to that from EXA.

I just was just experimenting as I wait for my new laptop drive to arrive.

Are you really expecting/demanding that 'older hardware' be fully supported in *all* *ubuntu releases? That is not realistic. Desirable maybe, but not realistic. That Karmic is a 'failure' on your 'older' system isn't anything more than an issue with your system and Karmic, not the other way around.
Yes, I think all releases should support them even if the performance isn't great. I think hard crashes to the system should not be happening. Yes, I think this since they are open source drivers.
