Bad failure in Ati Radeon drivers

In the new Kubuntu Karmic the ATI display drivers can' t operate with the Club's (ATI Radeon 7000) display adapter. Result: the kicker panel is covered by very thin vertical lines. Same failures are in opening Kmenu and program titlebars.

This driver error seems to cause problems in the OpenOffice programs also : It is impossible to see any of the pick ups.

One shortcut to try to get a usable desktop is to open something with a title bar, right-click on that and select "configure Window Behavior" so you can get to and enable desktop effects.
