Nvidia - Opening "System Settings/Display" gives BLACk Screen on 24" monitor

I have successfully installed the recommended Nvidia 185 drivers. I'm using an Acer 24" monitor and it recognized the monitor and defaulted to the proper 1920x1200 resolution.
Every time I select System Settings and click on Display, I get an all black screen and a moving window that says "input not allowed". The only way to get out of it is a hard reset or power off/on.
I've tried the other two (older) Nvidia driver sets and they both do the same thing.
Every thing else appears to work properly at this point.
    Any ideas?

As the doctor famously said ... "Then stop doing that to yourself".

That utility is not for the user who is using a proprietary driver. Forget you ever heard of it.

Do Alt-F2 "nvidia-settings" (without the quote marks) to access the nvidia driver's display utility. More details are here:

By the way, you almost NEVER need to push the power switch. Next time you are convinced that is the only way out of your problem, try this:

Press and hold down Alt-SysRq and then press, slowly in sequence, R S E I U B and watch your system gracefully restart, without filesystem damage.
