    sound screwed

    Hi to all,

Looks like the same problems with sound are in 9.10 as was in 9.04. Flash has no sound, pulse doesn't work and it looks like I will have to go back to ubuntu. Its a shame, kde looks great and is very responsive.
Oh and for good measure, audacity doesn't work at all, just freezes.

    Regards
    Muzza

        step 1) aplay -l -> failure

        step 2) lspci -v -> success

          Re: sound screwed

That seems to be a problem sound chip, according my searching on Ubuntu Forums and elsewhere.

Have you tried OSS? It is worth a shot -- it has drivers for chips that don't have ALSA drivers, in some cases.

          http://www.opensound.com/oss.html

Download the Linux driver/installer from that site, and run the installer.

Change your Linux sound base to OSS:
          Code:
          sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
          and choose OSS.

Reboot your system. No guarantees, but I have seen it work on some laptops where there's no ALSA driver working.

Here there are some other informations:
seems that the alsa drivers works but not the alsa backend?

Have you tried OSS? It is worth a shot -- it has drivers for chips that don't have ALSA drivers, in some cases.

              http://www.opensound.com/oss.html

Download the Linux driver/installer from that site, and run the installer.

Change your Linux sound base to OSS:
              Code:
              sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
              and choose OSS.

Reboot your system. No guarantees, but I have seen it work on some laptops where there's no ALSA driver working.
alsa worked perfectly before 9.10... When I upgraded from 9.4 all went wrong (no alsa, no xv, stupid Networkmanager behaviour), for me this is the worst kubuntu release EVER! :-(

                Re: sound screwed

I'm having similar problems here. Using Terratec Aureon Space 7.1 soundcard.

Audio worked fine on 9.04, but after upgrade audio only works in system, e.g. playing
music on Dragonplayer, systemsounds. When I fire up WINE or Virtualbox, sound dies.

                Using the command
                $killall pulseaudio

worked with WINE, but Virtualbox kills all audio, nothing works after it.

In System Settings > Multimedia I had pulseaudio as default in 9.04, which worked in
about every program out there. Now, it's silent, so I have to select

                'Terratec Aureon 7.1-Space (ICE1724)'

to get any sound out. And when I start Virtualbox, every sound output dies out.
When I press Test on PulseAudio, it clearly plays it - the sound _does_ go somewhere,
just not to the outputs. When the ICE1724 output dies, it won't hold the Test button
down, it jumps up immediatly (the output is just dead).

Is there a way to "zap" the card to reset or is there a quick fix for this? Restarting the
system is getting on my nerves + I need sound for Virtualbox very badly (working
                on a remix).

Virtualbox has many sound options, none of them work, the System Settings >
Multimedia page has many options, none of them work. I kind of ran out of
ideas here. Any help appreciated. ^^

What if I install the 9.10 from the CD, does anyone know if this will fix the audio?

                EDIT:
Just noticed that Virtualbox mutes the Master and PCM controls when it powers
down, so that's why there was no audio on the system (had to re-open the mixer
to see this). There are still occasions when the sound totally dies though.

If I stumble on a solution, I'll post it here. ^^

                EDIT 2:
Got the sound working. From the mixer, I changed the output of IEC958 from
"PCM Out" to "H/W 0" and IEC958 2 from "PCM Out" to "H/W 1". All other
outputs to "PCM Out". That fixed all the nags about outputs not working.

Fixed at least on my computer. Almost stole the thread, sorry about that. :P

                EDIT 3:
No, skip that. Sound is still fubar. Now with Kdeinit4, X and some other stuff
constantly crashing, I'm thinking about going back to 9.04.

                  Re: sound screwed

I think I fixed my problem.
It all started because I keep my old custom kernel (2.6.28.9) instead of upgrading to 2.6.31 (I use loop-AES and it doesn't work with the standard ubuntu kernel).
                  So I had different version from alsa-driver and alsa-lib e and alsa-utils.
I recompiled all the 3 packets from the last version and installed it.
For some strange reason the ./configure script of alsa-lib set the alsa-devdir to /dev/snd but alsa-driver used /dev! I found that the hard way by putting some 'printf' inside some files of alsa-lib.
So I had to give: ./configure --alsa-devdir=/dev inside alsa-lib and recompile and reinstall it.
                  No all work again... :-)
