    twin display and sound problem

    HI Folks,

I've used this machine for a few years now, desktop system. Installed fresh 64 bit Kubuntu on a new hard drive. I am a technical person, but relatively new to Kubuntu so I don't yet know my way around the innards of Linux properly.

    First issue...

Nvidea graphics card with one monitor plugged in the analogue port and another in the digital port. On initial install, the display came out of the digital monitor and the analogue monitor had odd text characters, some of which flashed various colours. ON loading the latest Nvidea drivers, the display is now on the analogue monitor, the digital monitor and the control panel says that my system doesn't support twin display.

The audio ... well, there isn't any :-) I did a search against "CK804 no sound" and didn't come up with much at all ... so I'm posting. Help!

Sound sorted. Now it is down to the video issue.

I'm not sure whether the sound was a codec thing with the web browser, but I got some MP3 files locally and they are happily playing.

      Right - nearly there.

After going down deeper in to a second set of settings, I found an nVidea panel. I can get the other screen to work, but on pressing the button to save to configuration, I get an error that it can't parse the xorg.conf ... so I'm going to hunt down that issue ... but of course if anyone happens to know the resolution to that one off hand, it would save me much time ;-)

        OK - got it.

THe nvidea system was unable to parse the existing file. There was only one thing to do - kill the existing one and write a new one.

Fortunately for me, the nVidea console allowed me to view a copy of what it was going to write to the file. All I had to do was copy this, put it in a new file and then use a terminal to get in to the /etc/X11 directory and "sudo cp /home/michelle/xorg.conf ." and that did the trick.

Now, on reboot, I get the proper display settings! Yay!

I think I should have a little more faith in myself.

The audio, I'm not sure. Just messed around with the sliders and, suddenly, something played.

I'm going to keep an eye on it, though.
