CPU fan not working after upgrade to Karmic

I installed 9.10 on my laptop today. This was an upgrade from 9.04. I did a fresh install to allow me to change the hard drive format to ext4.

Before I began I copied my /home directory onto an external hard drive. I then shut the machine down and booted with the RC CD-Rom.

My first install attempt was with just the installer, without booting into a live session. Everything was going well and I had completed inputing the user data, when I walked away. I came back and the computer was turned off. I found this rather odd. It would not boot, so I installed using the same method.

This time I watched the install... with my laptop on my lap. It was getting warm, very warm. When I checked the fan, it was not running. I placed the laptop on a table to allow more air to the bottom and it still shutdown on high temperature.

I then checked to see if the fan worked during the live session. It did, at least during boot up. It was then I completed the install. After the first boot I started copying the files from my external hard drive when I received repeated CPU errors due to overheating.

I then found a small battery powered fan and used that for a while. Until I shut it down to research the problem.

Yup, I'm not the only one.

I have a working lappy running kubuntu karmic RC

I scoured the internet and came to this page. Later, I found some users did not have issues after updating their BIOS. So I installed windows and updated the BIOS. I tried like heck to get it working without doing the install, to no avail. I reinstalled karmic and the fan is now working.

One other thing that is neat, my wifi LED is working! That hasn't worked since I first installed kubuntu two years ago.

What an attitude! ~"Karmic tried like heck to melt my processor, but hey, the wifi led is now working!"

Most times that experience would have ended with a "screw this crap" type post. I feel many people could learn a thing or two about life from you... including me.

Nice remark. I like this observation.

          Blessings to both.

(and also thanks for sending me to the end of the internet)
