TwinView, Notifications, Plasma Activities and Strigi

I love KDE and Kubuntu is my favorite distro.

But there are a few things I cant live without, and I really, really want them to work in Karmic.

    1. TwinView. I own Nvidia videocard and I've grown accustomed to use 2 monitors in my work. Unfortunately, Nvidia TwinView just doesn't work in the RC. In beta there was a moment between updates when I was able to make both of my monitors work + compositing, but it was impossible (for me at least) to save this configuration and I had to repeat the process from the beginning after every reboot. Now the moment is gone, 2 monitors + compositing + TwinView do not work and impossible to make a default configuration.

    2. Notifications. I believe, something should be done to the notification applet. Look at the images. I just inserted an Audio CD and tried to make Amarok play it.

    4. Plasma Activities. Why the Plasma Activities menu just disappeared? By the way, in Suse 11.2 RC there is a really cool feature: independent dashboard. It is possible to use independent set of widgets on the desktop and on the dashboard, I like this feature very much.

    5. Strigi. Please, please make Strigi work out of the box. Everybody will be amazed and will really appreciate this.

You are getting a lot . Here the Amarok 2 can't play the CD's. It is trying hard but:
    (dmesg
    ...
[ 1200.345580] sr1: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.
    [ 1460.704112] sr 3:0:1:0: [sr1] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
    [ 1460.704121] sr 3:0:1:0: [sr1] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 1460.704127] sr 3:0:1:0: [sr1] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
    [ 1460.704139] end_request: I/O error, dev sr1, sector 0
    [ 1460.704146] __ratelimit: 60 callbacks suppressed
    [ 1460.704150] Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 0
    [ 1460.704155] Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 1
    [ 1460.704166] Buffer I/O error on device sr1, logical block 2
    ...
It is a Amarok problem as the KsCD (audio CD player for KDE 4) and the alpha stage KDE media player Bangarang (> Topic: Media Players) don't have problems to play audio CD's.

    Funny > Amarok FAQ
    Q: How do I play audio-CDs

A: Amarok 2 does not currently support audiocd playback.

Do you mean the "Activity Bar - Tab bar to switch activities" widget ?

Here it is on the activity where it was launched/enabled.

2.16 How can I quickly move between Activities?

The ZUI method is rather slow, so a better way is to use an Activity Bar. A short how-to here explains exactly what you need to do.

2.19 Can the Dashboard show widgets other than those on my desktop?

Can the Dashboard show widgets other than those on my desktop?

Yes, it can. To configure it, click on the desktop cashew and zoom out. Choose "Configure Plasma" from the toolbox that it appears, and check the "Use a separate dashboard" option. Click on OK and you will have a different dashboard than your desktop when you access it.
Yes, it is a nice toy. Earlier > Topic: How do you set up your Activities?

    5. Strigi. Please, please make Strigi work out of the box. Everybody will be amazed and will really appreciate this.
It would be nice but i'm afraid that we have to wait to Kubutu 10.04 and the Virtuoso.

Thanks a lot! Interesting though, how did they manage to make Strigi work in Suse.

To me it looks like it would be easy to fix:
The better backend: soprano-backend-sesame + the symlink to the java (or the java.conf file).

but as the bug is "Unassigned" there is no one to fix it (?).

Yeah, you're right, I suppose. I'll try the soprano-backend-sesame + the symlink to the java as you suggested.

May be you know how to fix the TwinView problem? That's the most annoying trouble of all.

          Thanks again

Re: TwinView, Notifications, Plasma Activities and Strigi

BTW, Amarok played the CD in the end That's why I was absolutely sure that's a notification applet problem.
