screen doesn't comback from blanking

Using an older acer aspire 3000 laptop. SIS graphics card.

The machine works fine except when I just "leave" it and power management blanks the screen. No amount of mouse / touchpad tapping will get the screen to come back, but the machine is otherwise operating. If I do Fn + F4 to suspend the machine, then wake it up, the video comes back to life.

I also have Karmic installed on an IBM thinkpad T43 and an asus EEE-box desktop and I do not see this odd behavior.

I have to depress the power button briefly to revive mine after suspend to RAM. It is awakening rather than restarting.

Oddly, the COMPUTER isn't suspended when this happens, just the screen. It wakes find from suspend.

To get the screen to come back from power management blanking the screen, I have to suspend it using Fn+f4... then the screen comes back when I wake it up with the power button.

Something is not awakening the backlight from the dpms command power management is using.
