    external usb drive fauilure

    Hello. I plugged my usb drive and noticed there nothing appeared neither in /media nor in device notifier. However usb flash drive transcend 8 Gb works perfectly. Tried to make my external storage hdd work on laptop ASUS g50v by mounting it and all attempts failed . I have kubuntu 2.6.31-9 , the device is Transcend StoreJet 25M 500Gb
    Here is the log from terminal :

    just a shot in the dark ...
    Did you plug in and turn on the external HD and then try a re-boot to see if it would be detected? (Some SATA external HDs seem to require it, assuming the mobo and external do not support eSATA).

      Thank you for your reply Yeah , I plugged it in usb and restarted pc. I've never seen such a thing before: the sound speakers on my laptop beeped and I got following messages :
      * Loading kernel modules... [OK]
      * Loading manual drivers... [OK]
      * Setting kernel variables (etc/sysctl.conf)... [OK]
      * Setting kernel variables (etc/sysctl.d/10-console-management.conf)... [OK]
      * Setting kernel variables (etc/sysctl.d/10-network-security.conf)... [OK]
      * Setting kernel variables (etc/sysctl.d/wine.sysctl.conf)... [OK]

      Then my pc just frost and there were no reaction at all, neither from external hard drive. By the way it was working just perfect with kubuntu jaunty 9.04 and windows xp&vista. So I'm lost cause any other flash drives (not hdd) work. May be I'm missing something? Should I configure system somehow ?

          Re: external usb drive fauilure

          Hi Ruslan, it looks like your drive as not a high-high-speed device and due of this kernel is not able to recognize it correctly. Try to fix this using next way:

          Open your /etc/rc.local file(in Kate, for example):
          $sudo Kate /etc/rc.local

          Add the following string:
          echo 20 > /sys/module/scsi_mod/parameters/inq_timeout

          save the file and try to reboot.
          This will increase booting time up, but google says that this should help

            If you want to open up graphical apps with sudo, always always use kdesudo.
            Code:
            $ kdesudo kate
            KDE, I heart thee.

              I found solution eventually, trying to scrutinize the reason I found problems with loader. I got updated to Alplha 6 and it worked just perfect.
              Thanks to everyone , who has been involved in this thread !
