USB drive - slow to mount / unmount

Karmic has been really great in so many ways. KDE is the snappiest I have seen since 3.x Looks and funtions great for the most part.

I am having an odd issue with an WD My Book 500 GB usb drive ever since I installed alpha-4. If I click on the auto-mounter in Dolphin to mount it, it takes forever and a day for me to be able to move files to and from it. The drive light just shows 'activity' for a very long time, almost like the entire thing is being scanned for every file.

The latest 2.6. -10 kernel actually refused to unmount the drive once mounted giving a "busy" warning. Using -9 for now.

It should not be necessary to do that. USB devices, including hard drives, should be found by HAL and auto-mounted to /media. How long are you giving it after you plug it in? Wait 3 minutes, then in Konsole run lsusb and let's see if it is on the bus.

Late-breaking thought -- is it formatted NTFS? Because there is presently a bug, reported elsewhere on this forum, for NTFS formatted drives.

No, it is fat32. Under Intrepid, it just mounted and unmounted within seconds. What happens in karmic... I click the icon and the folders on the drive show up quick, but the blue drive light bobs up and down showing activity for over a minute. During this time, it almost locks up the computer, as in stuff is very slow to respond. I am just wondering what is going on. Is something indexing the files?
