[solved] No audio from flash player

I get no audio out of flash player in firefox, seamonkey, konqueror, or midori. (It doesn't work at all in arora, oh well.) Same setup works fine in jaunty.
In firefox, I have the Yahoo Mail Notifier installed, and it does generate its notification noise.
I tried the "sudo alsa force-reload" command I found in another posting, and that worked, once. But not since then.
I've been the unload/purge/delete/reinstall flash routine several times, no luck.
Anyone got it working?

Edit: I should mention the same problem exists with programs in wine. When the "alsa force-reload" thing worked I got audio out of wine, but not since or before. So I don't think it's just a flash issue.

Here the Arora, Rekonq, Konqueror, Opera, ... are working OK with the flash.

What kind of system do you have ? 32/64 bit ?

Do you have the ktorrent or the kget on ? Both could kill/lock the sound. There is a bug report for the ktorrent > Bug #372527:ktorrent locks audio device.

This is 64-bit, all the latest updates.

There is no kget or any kind of torrent in use.

Something I did observe:
In the pavucontrol applet, when I am getting sound out of a program, either firefox or anything else, I get an indication in the volumecontrol/playback tab. When flash stuff (or wine) is not producing audio, there is no indication. So it looks like the pulseaudio stuff, as far as playback is concerned, is working right. The audio feed is never getting there. I have tried maxing out everything in kmix, but this does not help it.

Doc, check your Kmix > Show Mixer > Settings > Configure Channels, and maybe put a checkmark in the PCM channel, if it is not checked.

Yep, that's already there.
In general audio seems to be working... alsaplayer, etc. work just fine.
So, far, just wine and flashplayer that don't.

After the upgrade yesterday (or was it the day before?) I noticed that flash videos no longer gave sound, but sound worked in everything else. I deleted all the flash files from my installation using Synaptic and then downloaded and installed the 64bit libflashplayer.so (9.1 Mb) in the various plugin subdirectories. Now I have flash video and sound in FF3.5 AND Konqueror, which didn't play flashvideos before.

I just tried that.
The 64-bit flash player won't run on my system at all. Just gives a blank screen, or no spot for flash at all. This, in firefox (which admittedly has a lot of security/annoyance-blockers) and seamonkey (which has no addons installed).
I reloaded the 32-bit, got video back, but still no sound.

I tried removing all instances of libflashplayer.so to do a reinstall, and found myself in the middle of flash player hell again. Evidently, firefox (and seamonkey) are actually using:
/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so
to play flash videos. So how do I get something, somewhere to install this using the 64-bit libflashplayer.so? I tried
nspluginwrapper ./libflashplayer.so
in the directory where the 64bit flash is, but it refuses to do anything, saying it can't find a suitable viewer.
Or is this not necessary, and if so, how do I get flash player working? Firefox>edit/preferences/applications refuses to install libflashplayer.so by itself.
OK, this is not the real problem, but if we can get flash working properly, it may be easier to degub than wine.

Which uncompressed into a directory of the same name containing:

Everywhere you see "libflashplayer.so" in the locate command above is where I copied the 64b library.

OK, I think the problem is here:

Here is what I have:

/var/lib/flashplugin-installer/npwrapper.libflashplayer.so

Without the part in /var/lib... there is no flash in firefox. Under Edit/Preferences/Application/FlashVideo, it refuses to install libflashplayer.so by itself, and it refuses to see the plugin in Tools/Addons/Plugins. So that may be where the difficulty lies. I can't figure out how to get firefox to see libflashplayer without the npwrapper, and that seems to be the problem.

SOLVED- stupid issue

As downloaded, libflashplayer.so does not have the execution bits set.

Once I woke up to that, the 64 bit libflashplayer.so works, and with audio.
No npwrapper needed. Note that the 32bit player does not work at all. No matter.

Is npwrapper what you use to run the 32-bit flash on 64-bit OS? I have no npwrapper, but have working flash on both Kubuntu 9.10 / Firefox 3.5.2 and sidux / Icweasel 3.5.2. I searched for npwrapper and it doesn't exist here. Only libflashplayer.so. If you can purge the 32-bit stuff and just use the 64-bit flash player, you might fix it.

I've always wondered, why any component provided by a developer, that needs to be executable, isn't set as such as part of the installation after download. A clearly stated warning on the download site stating this requirement would be the least one would expect. Or is it already so stated?

Yeah, FYI, it looks like, at least on my system, npwrapper is required for the 32-bit player. Otherwise I just get a white screen. The 64-bit won't work with npwrapper, but once I found my, uhh, oversight, the 64-bit works fine on its own.

A clearly stated warning on the download site stating this requirement would be the least one would expect. Or is it already so stated?

I'll have to go back and check that. I sure didn't notice it, if it is. I wonder how many people's problems with flashplayer come down to this.

Edit: I checked the installation instructions, and they are pretty sparse, with no mention of execution bits:

Linux

1. Download the plugin to begin installation. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.
2. Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.
3. Quit your browser.
4. Remove all existing Adobe Flash Player installations from the system.
5. Unpackage the file. A directory with contains libflashplayer.so will be created.
6. Copy libflashplayer.so to ~/.mozilla/plugins. Create the 'plugins' folder if it does not exist yet.
7. Launch your brower. To verify installation in Firefox choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser
