Internal microphone has become noisy on Thinkpad

The internal microphone in my Thinkpad X200s, which worked fine under Jaunty, has become very noisy - there's all sorts of fuzz and distortion. I first noticed it with Skype, when people complained they could hardly hear me. But recordings on Audacity are the same.

System information, if it helps anyone:

    Code:
    ian@marmot:~$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
     Subdevices: 1/1
     Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

    ian@marmot:~$ lspci |grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
In System Settings > Multimedia, the only input option I'm given is HDA Intel (CONEXANT Analog).

Any ideas for anything I can try? My parents are getting miffed that we can't chat on Skype (me: not too concerned )

One hates to think of an internal component wearing out, but .... it doesn't sound like a driver issue to me.

Do you have any other OSs that you can boot (on CDs or whatever)? I would want to try it with other OSs and see if the problem is the same regardless of the OS. If it's only Kubuntu, then you can work on it -- look for software/driver issues. If it's on every OS, then your mic is going bye-bye.
