Black screen after login in KDE4 [SOLVED]

    Hi guys.

Yesterday, after update and upgrade, I can't login with my user/password. After login, I can only see a black screen with the mouse cursor, a big problem.

Can anyone help me? Failsafe session and other didn't work too.

    Thanks in advance.

This sounds to me like a problem with desktop effects, I used to see something very similar every time I re-installed or upgraded Kubuntu because the installation process enabled desktop effects by default which screwed up my display.

Desktop effects are enable in a file called kwinrc so you'll need to edit this file:

    - from the black screen switch to a login shell (Ctrl-Alt-F1)
    - login with your username and password
    - type the following: nano ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc
    - use the cursor keys to navigate to the [Compositing] section
    - find the line Enabled=true and change it to read Enabled=false
    - Press Ctrl-x then follow the prompts at the bottom of the screen i.e. press 'y' to save changes and Enter to confirm filename
    - reboot: shutdown -r now

    Hopefully that will fix it.

      Hi quarkslot.

Thank you very much for your help :-)

The problem was that / partition was at 100%, sorry!

I think that Kubuntu will be give a tip of that issue...

      Thanks again, quarkslot.

Re: Black screen after login in KDE4 [SOLVED]

A friend brought his laptop to me last Saturday so I could install Kubuntu on it. He "said" that he had freed up 25Gb for the installation.

So, I inserted the LiveCD of the 9/17 beta and went through the install. When it came to the question of where to install it I selected the option "side by side" and then let it rip.

The installation appeared to go well and when I was presented with the login screen I entered the password. The login splash screen disappeared for a moment and then came back. I rebooted and was given the same space. I thought it was a graphic problem and tried failsafe. It failed. I then used the option to open to a konsole and when it popped open a msg appeared that said the home account has 0% diskkspace left!!!

I did an fsck and was greeted with the information that the Kubuntu partition was only 2.5 GB, NOT 25Gb !!! He gave me a sheepish grin and said "Opps!".

It was a dual boot so I booted into the XP side and with the disk manager deleted the Kubuntu partition and freed up the disk space. I rebooted and XP failed to boot because GRUB was on the deleted partiion. Now it was getting funny!

I rebooted the LiveCD and when it came to the question about where to install it I chose the custom option and repartitions the ntfs to allow for about equal shares of the HD. Then I installed Kubuntu on a REAL 25Gb partition. I rebooted and the Grub menu didn't show XP. I booted into Kubuntu and it said the Superblock was in future time. Fsck'd it and I rebooted and got a clean Kubuntu 9.10 running. I fixed up the grub menu with an update-grub command. I rebooted and tried XP. Windows complained, as I suspected it would since it had only half the disk space it thought it should have. After XP corrected its settings on partition size it ran well. I rebooted and Kubuntu complained about a superblock being in the future again. Fsck'd it, and set it to use UTC time, and to set the hardware clock.

Now both boot and run fine.

After that afternoon of fun the wives came home from an afternoon of shopping and we went out for dinner.

Everybody had a good time! 8)
