    Re: unable install any software

What are you trying to install?
A few programs (eg. Dillo) are started from the command line and don't show up in any menus. In all cases you can open a terminal and type "which programname" where programname is the name of the program you supposedly have installed. That will display where the program is, and thus confirm that it exists on your computer.

        Are you using Kpackagkit?

if so it's kind of broken for most installs! ...........open a terminal and type

        Code:
        sudo apt-get update
if it spits out a list like this

        Code:
        vinny@desktop:~$ sudo apt-get update

Please open up a command prompt and post the output from the following command:

            ping -c 4 91.189.90.142

            AND this:

            ping -c 4 archive.canonical.com

            AND
can you post the contents or attach your /etc/apt/sources.list here so someone can test it for you?

Also, I noticed you got the following errors:
            "W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/restricted Packages (/var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_jaunty_restricted_ binary-i386_Packages)

You should remove the duplicate sources from your /etc/apt/sources.list.

Why does everyone reccomends Synaptic? Adept is still in the repositories, and works fine if KPackageKit fails. Adept was also the default package manager in Kubuntu 7.10, 8.04 and 8.10

I wonder too. I use Adept but the two appear similar. Synaptic seems to be a little less linear, but otherwise the program descriptions are the same and both lack basic information. Since Adept comes with the current LTS I would assume that it was trouble free and supported.

Actually, I'm happy using apt-get, except when I need to look up the name of a package, synaptic (or adept) comes in handy.

But, if you look at the number of posts about Adept errors in the past 3 years, and count them, you will see why people needed something else.

                    There are several reasons.

                    (1) The version of Adept that was the default package manager in 7.10 and 8.04 is NOT the version that's still in the main repositories. You'd have to go and enable the KDE 3.5 repo to get that version.

                    (2) The KDE4 version of Adept, which was re-written mostly from scratch IIRC, was never quite finished. It doesn't have the level of polish that Synaptic does, nor is it even feature-complete. There are things that Synaptic can do that it can't; there are things that it should be able to do, but it fails at because of bugs. Searching is particularly prone to weirdness, and that's the main reason why we'd be recommending a GUI frontend for people in the first place!

                    (3) Synaptic is the official package manager for Ubuntu, whereas Adept for KDE4 isn't the official package manager of Kubuntu. Thus, Synaptic is still supported (and given extensive examples) for *buntu 9.04 and 9.10, while Adept quite simply is not.

I could go on :P Personally though I'm hoping (K)Ubuntu gets Debian's new GTK frontend for Aptitude, which would add some welcome choice. I still use Adept-KDE3 and Synaptic a lot; I prefer Adept-KDE3, but I far prefer (albeit begrudgingly) Synaptic to Adept-KDE4 or KPackageKit. As it stands now, at least; lately KPackageKit has worked just fine for me for updates, so that's promising.

Hopefully soon we'll have Synaptic, Aptitude-GTK, and KPackageKit all in friendly competition on the same level. For now, though, Synaptic is the only fully-featured and stable GUI for package management we have in the main repositories.

My head is reeling with all the different this ept and that apt something sounding managers.
                      (1) The version of Adept that was the default package manager in 7.10 and 8.04 is NOT the version that's still in the main repositories. You'd have to go and enable the KDE 3.5 repo to get that version.
I'm running 8.04, and 2.1.3ubuntu25.1 is the version of Adept listed in both Synaptic and Adept with the default repos, presumably because I upgraded online and thus ended up with KDE 3.5.

Actually, I'm with dibl on this one. Apt-get is best, and then use the others only as a package list. Apt-get is also more direct and simple for amateurs (like me) who may not understand the whole system yet.

Back on topic: I wonder how the OP (swagatmili) is making out?

Yeah, when I said "not still in the main repositories" I meant for current versions; naturally, the version of Adept that was default in 7.10 and 8.04 is still the default if you're running those. Technically speaking, though, the Kubuntu devs decided that 8.04 wouldn't be an LTS for the Kubuntu side of things, so even though the basic Ubuntu 8.04 is LTS the Kubuntu side is deprecated.

It's actually one of the big reasons I still use *buntu, though (apart from all the dozens of other reasons haha), since "kb9vqf" has been maintaining some pretty brilliant repos for post-8.04, including some major bug fixes and little feature additions. In fact, it keeps getting better, and the 9.10/Karmic release looks like it might be the best Kubuntu-KDE3 environment yet, years now after the KDE devs moved on. Open Source is pretty damn awesome sometimes

(Plus I'll get to say "Kubuntu Karmic Koala KDE3" )

Actually, on topic yet still off topic, the only reason why I didn't just outright agree with the "apt-get is best" assertion is it isn't really best for newbies, but yeah I definitely prefer it myself (well, I switch back and forth between apt-get and aptitude, but both are pretty damn similar).

Also, "ept" would be a good name for an apt clone or branch or something

@KeithZG: What do you mean with "the KDE 4 version of Adept isn't the default package manager?" Because in Kubuntu 8.10, the KDE 4 version of Adept is the default package manager.

                          Default package managers:

The KDE 4 version, which was the default in 8.10, was a work in progress. It was unstable not only in the practical sense, but from a classification standpoint; the last release considered stable was 2.13, the KDE 4 version only ever got to "3 beta 4" (meaning Kubuntu Intrepid never had a stable default package manager).

There was never a finished version of Adept 3 (ie. the KDE 4 version), and development was abandoned when it was decided to use KPackageKit as the future default package manager of Kubuntu (which left us with two releases in a row with an arguably beta package manager as the default!). The sign-off post from the developer can be seen here: http://web.mornfall.net/blog/farewell__44___adept.html

So okay, if you're running 8.10 still for some reason, yes, the abandoned beta of Adept version 3 is your default package manager. When I said "the KDE 4 version of Adept isn't the default package manager", you'll notice the tense; I didn't say "never was", but it isn't today, or in the near future (Karmic) or anytime after that (Karmic+1,+2,....+x).

Adept had been the default . . . since the beginning, if I recall correctly? So, for a half-dozen versions the KDE3 incarnation of Adept was the Kubuntu default, and now for 9.04 and 9.10 onwards KPackageKit looks like it's going to be. Adept's KDE4 beta life as a temporary substitute in Kubuntu Intrepid's time of need was more a blip than anything else.
