    Re: Random Crashes.

To add a little fuel to the fire, I'm having the same problem in Jaunty and I have Nvidia graphics and I am not using KDE.

    I'll try the x-updates.

Don't know if it would or not. I ran the x-updates and so far, no hangups. I'll post back if it seems to resolve the problem.

Im a linux newbie at best. Is Karmic a different branch OS? or similar to a replacement to plasma?
Kubuntu 9.04 a.k.a Jaunty Jackalope is the CURRENT version of Kubuntu. Undergoing alpha testing is the NEXT version of Kubuntu to be released, Kubuntu 9.10 a.k.a Karmic Koala. I have two versions of Karmic running, the 32bit version on my Acer Aspire 3960 and the 64bit version on my Sony VAIO VGN-FW140E/H.

is there anything in /var/log/messages or /var/log/Xorg.0.log that indicates the crash? if it's a full-blown, hard down, need to power the system off with the power button kind of crash, there may be something in /var/crash/ that might help.
                    # make install --not-war

most of the time you can reboot with the- alt>sysrq R,S,E,I,U,B thing but if (and it dose some times)it freezes a second time after that it usualey requiers the power button.

will check the log's you mentiond now.

EDIT: nothing of intrest and....../var/crash/ was empty.

My 32 bit Karmic on my Acer laptop (Intel GM945) is rock solid. My 32 bit Jaunty primary partition on this laptop is rock solid. (Intel GM45 with PPA enhancements and i915 driver). The 64 bit Karmic partition (Intel i915 driver) on this laptop is rock solid as long as I don't run SecondLife. It hangs and requires Sysreq within a minute or two if I do run SL.
