    Random Crashes.

    I have an Acer Aspire 3680-2682 (Celeron M 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD Kubuntu9.04)
    I mainly am running just simple things that came with the software, like Amarok, Kopete, And firefox is the one of the only external things i've installed. I use wicd for I have an Atheros WifiCard.

    The OS just seems to crash at random times.
    The keyboard will freeze up, if Music is playing it will continue. The mouse moves, but nothing can be clicked.
    I really can use some help. Not sure what can be causing this, perhaps its my specs? ._.

    This fact reveals that the system is NOT crashed, only the X server is crashed. This means that the issue is probably limited to a video driver problem. So, in a Konsole window run
    Code:
    lspci -v
    and post the section that begins something like this:
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: .........

      same hear for about a week or 2 -3 I first notesed it after a round of updates that included firefox-3.0.14 but firefox dosent half to be open for the freeze to ocure ..(at first I was thinking firefox was the culpret) ..and same hear with the musick ....it hapend wile I was using VLC and the hole play list finished (2 songs left) with no keybord actions working (exep the alt>sysrq R,S,E,I,U,B) and the mouse curser abele to move around the screne but not abele to select or do eneything but the musick happley playing away to my frustration.

      I'v ben trying to ketch a runaway prosess with top but it never happens wile I have it runing ware I can see it if things freeze..........(he hears the computer snicker as he types this----or was that hard drive thrashing?) ..................it literaley just did it twice in a row just befor I got to this post ........verey unusual it usualey onley happens once every day or three..........and the second was as to not alowe the alt>sysrq thing ........it was power button off

      I uped from KDE 4.2.2 to 4.3.1 but still the same (I was going to up to 4.3.1 eneyway)

      nothing about this is reprodusable it just seams random with no comon denominator.

        I can only feel sorry for the folks struggling with these Intel GPUs. I know there are issues making the Intel drivers work -- there's a whole thread on Ubuntu Forum on the topic:

                I just loaded Karmic daily 9/17/09 onto an Acer Aspire 3690. It, too, has a 945GM video chip. Sofar, both the video and the rest of the PC is running great under Karmic. I have loaded SecondLife and it runs very well also. Not one crash, not one problem. I did do an md5sum on both the downloaded ISO and on the CD after I burned it to make sure both were good.

                    Vinny, it said not to trust GlxGears.
                    I did the same with the safe config, But i cant get the Key installed in the step

                    2. Import the X Updates PPA key, update your apt sources, and perform an upgrade:
                    Code:
                    $ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com AF1CDFA9
                    $ sudo apt-get update
                    $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

                    When I type the first step my terminal comes back saying "option --recv-keys isnt understood"
                    Anyone want to help me with that, Its for the X-updates package.

                    @greygeek,
                    Im a linux newbie at best. Is Karmic a different branch OS? or similar to a replacement to plasma?

                      ya I know thats why I included extreme tux racer to and keping an eye on top I see things like xorg,plasma,kwin jumping up and down as you do diferent things.

                      and it would seam as though thay jumpet up higher for longer and more ofen with that stuff ......for me eney way.

                      I'm going to log into Gnome the rest of the week and see if it will happen hear.

                              ok 3-4 day's in Gnome (added Gnome to Kubuntu 9.04 KDE 4.3.1) and no freezes yet .............

                              SO dose that exclude the intel GPU xorg bug or not?

                              I would think it now becomes a KDE thing but that would be a first gess.

                              and let me add in Gnome I am useng compiz.real for 3D and in KDE the default (Kwin I gess).
