System won't shut down after choosing "Shut Down" command

Whenever I try to shut down my computer on Kubuntu, it doesn't completely shut down. I get an error message and the words "system halted" but the computer doesn't turn off. However, if I choose to restart the computer, the system completely shuts down and the computer reboots. I installed Kubuntu without ACPI on a computer with two hard drives as part of a dual-boot configuration with Windows XP Pro. I tried installing with ACPI but the setup program crashed on an ACPI error. Did I do something wrong when I installed Kubuntu or is it something else. Help would be greatly appreciated since I'm technically still new to Kubuntu.

Have a look at System Settings > Advanced > Session Manager

This includes options for system shut down (power off), restart and session log out.

If that doesn't work, check your system log files to see if there are any clues there.

I see this issue also. I have found if I logout then shutdown from the kdm menu it works.
I too would like to know what can be done to fix the shutdown issue.
