SOLVED kde login loop - minor system crashes

    Hi,

I was wondering... from time to time I am doing something that is killing mu Kubuntu. Usually I need to reinstall. Some time ago I was reading that if you messed up something in Linux, you can restore previous kernel... or headers and whole thing is going back to the state when it was working ok.

That might be true on not, but - what are you guys doing when minor brake in system came? Is there any way to restore previous (stable) system from some copy ? Any usual things to to before reinstall will be necessary ?

Kubuntu Karmic Koala AMD64bit Acer Aspire 7520

    Re: minor system crashes

Your Linux system keeps logs of its activities, in /var/log. You should familiarize yourself with the logs there -- they will tell you what is going wrong. They will reveal your "something" that is killing Kubuntu. Immediately after you crash it, boot a Live CD if you need to, and open the system logs and the Xorg log, and see what is crashing it. Then you'll have something to fix, and it won't crash any more.

      Re: minor system crashes

I am doing it now and really helps. I was travelling via few countries recently and after coming back - when I am starting my laptop, after password I see desktop (plasma) it crashes immediatelly and goes back to login. Sometimes I need to login up to 6 - 9 times. I checked the logs but it doesn't tell me anything more than problem with network. Is there anything more for experienced user?

        Re: minor system crashes

The problem that you are describing (X crash at greeter) sounds like a video issue of some sort, but the system log that you posted shows the networking startup, which probably has no relevance to the problem.

In the FAQs in my signature is a video problem where the greeter seems to let you log in, but then fails to start the desktop and loops back to the login greeter again. You might want to take a look at the links there. There are several possible causes, including a full filesystem, an .ICEauthority or .Xauthority file that has been inadvertently changed to root permissions, or some video driver problem.

          Re: minor system crashes

Very interesting stuff. Thank you. I think I know what might be cause - I was using aircrack while on the trip. Program is saving (as a root) files to decode to my home folder. I have removed them few days ago, and If I remember well - that's when problem with loop came. I just changed all my folders to my user on premissions. What about those hidden files & hidden program folders in main home=user folder. They all got "Varying Premissions" and any change of them comes back with error. How is to best set them ?

That will definitely cause the problem, which is why *buntu is not a great platform for air cracking. Better to use BT3 or slax or something like that.

Delete or rename the .ICEauthority and .Xauthority files, restart X, and maybe you'll get in. If not, you are probably stuck renaming the entire .kde hidden folder, and restarting X -- that means you lose all custom Desktop settings and get a default KDE4 desktop.

              Re: minor system crashes

So far so good That was probably the cause.

My new golden rule: DON'T STICK ON /HOME ANYTHING THAT BELONGS TO ROOT

              Thank you for help dibl
