[Resolved] Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

System
HP Pavilion 061 with dual boot, Kubuntu Jaunty 9.04 & Windows XP Professional SP3
model#: PU061AV
X-86 based PC
AMD Athlon 64 processor 3200+1.79GHz
1.25 GB of RAM
Video:NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (dedicated)
hard drive: Maxtor 6Y080M0, 60GB
This all began as I was trying to activate my desktop cube. The issue has changed course & seems to be because of another underlying problem. This topic is branching off of my previous Desktop Cube topic. It seems to be an all together different problem so I decided to create a topic for the dependency/configuration issue.

New Problem: Issues when Installing & uninstalling packages.

Here is what I know about the problem. The code below is showing the uninstall of compiz. This is happening on other packages as well.

Code:
Code:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get remove compiz
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
compiz
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
5 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 73.7kB disk space will be freed.

The two bolded packages above are either not installed or remain unconfigured.

Open a console and type:
Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
See if these two packages finish being configured. If they do, then run:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
and then:
Code:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Re: Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

hmmm,

you can try: sudo apt-get install -f

or...

sudo apt-get install --reinstall package1 package2 package3..etc

package# = linux kernel packages (all of the ones including headers, restricted modules, sources, etc)

Re: Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

Is your file system ext3 or ext4?

From your post, it looks like the upgrade process is failing on the update-grub command.
If you are using ext4, this may be an instance of a known problem.
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3105491.0

Are you booting from the same partition on which your kubuntu system is located?

You might try running
Code:
sudo update-grub
and see what error messages it gives.

Re: Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

In bhamm77 other post, he identifies the kernel he is running on:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo uname -a
Linux ben-desktop 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
ben@ben-desktop:~$
But the messages below in his attempts to remove compiz identify kernel component packages for 2.6.28-15 Could this be the cause of all the trouble?

Re: Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

Yeah, the problem is that the system is trying to install the upgrade to -15, and it's failing.
As a part of that process, it will try to run update-grub, which is failing here:
Setting up linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic (2.6.28-15.49) ...
Running depmod.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-15-generic
Running postinst hook script /sbin/update-grub.
[: 25: /sbin/update-grub: unexpected operator
exec: 25: -a: not found
User postinst hook script [/sbin/update-grub] exited with value 2
Now if he is booting off an ext4 partition, there is a known problem with grub.
If not, then update-grub is failing for some other reason, and preventing the upgrade from going through.
That's why I want him to try the update-grub by itself, and seeif it gives a more useful error message.

Re: Dependecy problems & unconfigured packages

I'm not sure what is wrong here, but I would try the following experiment:
First, make sure you have a backup of your system, and a live CD that you can boot from if all else fails.

The update-grub process is failing; whether that's killing the whole upgrade or not, I don't know, but we can find out.

cd /etc
sudo cp kernel-img.conf kernel-img.conf-backup

Then edit the file kernel-img.conf using whatever editor you prefer (you will have to sudo or kdesudo to edit this file)

remove the lines that say:

postinst_hook = update-grub
postrm_hook = update-grub
do_bootloader = no

save the file and try the sudo dpkg --configure -a again.

If that works, then try sudo update-grub again.

(this is based on information in man update-grub)

Thought we had it resolved there for a minute, but when I tried to update grub, no progress.

I was given a suggestion to do the following......

Code:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic linux-headers-2.6.28-15

Code:
Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
& leave kernel 2.6.28-15-generic alone for the moment.

Think I should try this? Or do you have something else that you think we I should try 1st. Thanks alot for your help by the way. I'm fairly new to linux and this one is proving rather difficult.

Definitely DO NOT do the purge! Your new kernel is installed. Now all we need to to is get grub going.

We are making progress here!

First, we need to see if you can in fact boot the new kernel.
Second, then we need to figure out what grub's problem is.

First question: Are you booting from the same partition that your kubuntu system is installed on?

Second, please post your /boot/grub/menu.lst file

OK, one little problem I hadn't noticed before. When you ran the "blkid -L" command, the output didn't list any UUID values for your drives. Yet, your menu.lst files does have UUIDs in it. That may be what grub is choking on.
Try this:
Code:
sudo blkid
and also
Code:
file /lib/udev/vol_id
and post their outputs.

Now, to test your new kernel, you will need to edit your menu.lst file.

After the line that says
### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST
add the following:

Code:
title Kubuntu System on /dev/sda4
root (hd0,3)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda4 ro
initrd /initrd.img
boot

title Kubuntu System on /dev/sda4 (rescue mode)
root (hd0,3)
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda4 ro single
initrd /initrd.img
boot
Note that this is the old way (pre-uuid) of doing grub, and it should work. There will be no splash screen -- we need to see if there are any error messages during the boot process. No reason to panic if this doesn't work; you can still boot your old kernel.

The UUID values were missing because I edited them out. Sorry, didn't realize they would be needed. Below is an unedited look at: blkid -L

Code:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo blkid -L
device fs_type label mount point UUID
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
/dev/sda1 vfat HP_RECOVERY (not mounted) 4BDC-5AED
/dev/sda2 ntfs HP_PAVILION /windows AE48CE1248CDD8EB
/dev/sda4 ext2 / 7af78ba6-bb59-448f-9b7d-ff15112af47b
/dev/sda5 swap <swap> e2b69d33-b30e-4a50-b23d-a4f3fb56757b
ben@ben-desktop:~$
now for blkid.....

Code:
ben@ben-desktop:~$ sudo blkid
/dev/sda1: LABEL="HP_RECOVERY" UUID="4BDC-5AED" TYPE="vfat"
/dev/sda2: UUID="AE48CE1248CDD8EB" LABEL="HP_PAVILION" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sda4: UUID="7af78ba6-bb59-448f-9b7d-ff15112af47b" TYPE="ext2"
/dev/sda5: TYPE="swap" UUID="e2b69d33-b30e-4a50-b23d-a4f3fb56757b"
Do you still want me to edit in the recommended addition to menu.lst?
