    Re: 64 bit ram usage and swapping

    I dont think this is a problem I am not sure what this htop program really is but for instance is a snippet from the output. If this were true I would need about 15 gigs just for virtualbox

    I always start with a blank session and as stated I have switched from kde to gnome which is like a fresh desktop right now.

    Since Free and Top commands almost always show me full memory while htop and kde monitor show me what I think is the real number maybe some programs are swapping out because they think my ram is full?

    What would cause this difference any idea? The screenshot really explains what i mean in previous post.

    Also please note that I know Virtualbox is a memory hog I am only running it now for some things

      Re: 64 bit ram usage and swapping

      Ok I think I have figured out that the different ram amounts in different programs are because of cache in the ram. When I mouse over the gui applet that reports what I think is my correct ram it says 45% by programs 55% in use as cache.

      I think there is just something going wrong with the cache not letting my programs in or something. Now that I have disabled my swap drive my computer has run flawlessly all day.

      I think I will just leave it off for awhile and slowly turn back on all the things I enjoy like desktop effects etc then eventually turn swap back on

      Thank you for all the help I am not going to mark this as solved just yet and will update my status.

        Re: 64 bit ram usage and swapping

        I have switched completly to gnome hoping to solve this and still have same problem.

        I recently reenabled swap and when I wake up I have 1GB of swap with only 700mb of ram usage. Computer runs horribly until I cycle the swap drive on and off.

        I turned it on because i was experiencing crashes which I am trying to narrow down. I have diabled avant and effects along with re-enabling swap. During this period I had no crashes so I am slowly reenabling things one at a time.

        I now run the following script from cron so that I can monitor my ram usage

        #!/bin/bash
        FREE=`free -mt | awk '{ print $4 }'`
        FREE_NOCACHE=`echo ${FREE} | awk '{ print $3 }'`
        if [ ${FREE_NOCACHE} -gt 1800 ]; then
        if ! ps aux | grep -v grep | grep gmessage > /dev/null
        then
        DISPLAY=:0.0 gmessage "WARNING RAM IS LOW LOW LOW THRESHOLD MET.. CURRENTLY USING ${FREE_NOCACHE} out of 2000!" -center &
        echo "Ram is at ${FREE_NOCACHE} popup displayed";
        else
        #gmessage "WARNING RAM IS LOW LOW LOW THRESHOLD MET!" -center
        echo "Ram is at ${FREE_NOCACHE} popup already opened";
        fi
        fi

        Now if I have any crashes I can at least check my local mail to see if I was having ram issues when it happened.
