NFS vs Samba

I have had a windows 2003 Server in my home for a long time, and just switched it over to Ubuntu. I currently run Kubuntu on My laptop, and my wife has a Mac...so...

Currently, all my shared drives are connected via Samba, and it works fine...I'm just wondering what might be the benefits of using NFS, or even something else, since I don't have any windows machines anymore.

Also, if there is a benefit, how would I go about making the change?

I think, the main advantage of Samba is security, and Windows compat (which is of course what you don't need now), and the main nfs advantage is speed. I tried Samba in my Linux-Linux environment (PC as server + eeepc as client). It was easy to set up from KDE, and it worked. But I couldn't play server files on the client, I had to copy them first (YMMV). With NFS, once mounted, it works as a local folder. You can't tell the difference.

I would start by exporting them both as samba and nfs if you want to try nfs (that is, only add it progressively). Maybe start sharing one directory to one machine.

I am not sure this can be configured from KDE's System Settings or the share config dialog in the folder context menu in Dolphin. I did it manually as part of a mythbuntu setup, and I actually ditched mytbuntu and just left the nfs shares to play in the eeepc (client) media files stored in the PC (server).

although i use both samba and nfs on my server.. (my wii and ps2 dont like nfs)
for moving files to and from one linux machine(or mac) to another nfs is faster (trans rate ~12mbps compared to 8mbps with samba)
