Where did my desktop environment go?

Because of all the buttons pressed, I decided to do a fresh install. I messed with nothing this time, just installed Firefox and a few other programs.
But my entire desktop has now disappeared again.
    Below is a screen shot.
There are no widgets, no dektops, no icons in the panel at the bottom of the desktop etc. Just grey and white squares on the desktop.
Apart from this everything seems to be working fine.
Could anyone tell me what may have gone wrong.

Were you presented with the login screen, and did it render correctly? If yes, then after logging in, the desktop rendered as you've shown in the image posted. Is this correct?

This is odd. Can you right click and get a context menu where you can tweak Appearance Settings? Maybe you can add a wallpaper and hten add the desktop widget and be done!

Is this the same home directory you had before? It may be the old settings not read correctly now.

Boot into recovery mode (single user). At the prompt type:
          Code:
          lspci | grep Graphics
Copy and paste the output in your reply.

You said the rest is ok, no? Maybe you can open a konsole and type

            sudo apt-get update
            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
            sudo apt-get upgrade

            Hopefully that will do!

              Not while your updating!

When you boot, you are presented with the Grub menu, yes? For each installed kernel, there is a second entry - recovery mode - which boots you to the command line.

It looks like you've lost Plasma, try the following command to remove the config files and reboot.

                rm ~/.kde/share/config/plasma*

Personally, I wouldn't try anything until the update finishes (the previous one was interrupted). I would logout, login and see if it is fixed. If not, I would try all the other things.

Did you reboot after the upgrade?

well, i am just glad you are up and running - if you can fix the first one in your spare time you may resize them later on to take all the disk over

You may want to install icewm, and try to fix things from a icewm session
