SOLVED: upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04

    hi guys,
I have done the upgrade from kubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-11 to kubuntu 9.04 , the procedure went smoothly , I turn off the machine and turn on again . I noticed the GRUB menu displays the old entry i.e. "ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-11" etc..etc.. I made the first choice (generic) the system require userid e passwd but the desktop isn't displayed.

from tty1 I code "uname " and the system displays "Linux Kid 2.6.27-11-generic" so I haven't the 9.04 but the old 8.10 and it doesn't work of course.

    please any suggestions ??

    thanks very much

    Hi!

I suspect your upgrade didn't go through. Maybe try this in the terminal:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
This will hopefully bring you up to date. If the next update doesn't have a Graphical server, reboot again in Rescue Mode, and choose the option to repair graphics, hopefully that will get you going!

I tried this (apt-get update + upgrade) but the system says there isn't any packages to update but the system doesn't work.

please what could I do ?

Have you tried rebooting into rescue mode and repairing graphics, does that work?

Re: upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04

I also tried It but nothing isn't working . the problem is how can I restart the 9.04 upgrade from this situation ? because the system says there is nothing to upgrade but the boot starts with the Linux 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-11 generic, a very strange situation.

how can I get out of this mess ??
          thanks for any help

What does your sources list say?

Open a Terminal and issue the command:
            kdesudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list
Copy and Paste the results here.

Well, kate will not work, there is no X. But that's a good idea, I was going to suggest this:

              Code:
              sudo pico /etc/apt/sources.list
Then add a "#" in front of all the existing lines (to make them comments), and add this:

              Code:
deb [url]http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/[/url] jaunty main restricted multiverse
Now you should be able to refresh, see new packages and go from there.

In the first place I would have checked that there were no intrepids in the sources list and there were only jauntys.

If there any intrepids they should be replaced by jaunty.

                Did you try
                sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
                ?

Re: upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04

I tried to comment "#" all the sources.list and I have added the "deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted multiverse" so I coded <apt-get update>, it worked, and after <apt-get dist-upgrade> but I have had :
                  ".......bla..bla.......
                  Calculating upgrade ................ Done
0 upgrading, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded"

it means no upgrading, and <uname -a> gives "Linux Kid 2.6.27-11-generic .....etc" i.e. I have the 8.10 that isn't work.

NB: the sources.list has only the above line.

                  thanks everybody

So you see the 2.6.28 kernel installed, right? There is something about grub not picking it up. Do you have only one disk? Then I would recommend:

                        Code:
                        sudo update-grub
                        sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
You can also install kgrubeditor and go to System Settings -> Advanced and try to fix grub from there.

OK there were some problems: first the grub wasn't updated, now I have done the manual update and it is ok, second the .kde was wrong, in fact I erased it and after restarting the pc all is ok.

thanks a lot for your support.
