    (Solved) my notebook screen keeps going blank

    I have an hp Compaq nx9600 with no modifiations to the computer and I am running it in duel boot with windows XP pro. I have had this problem for some time and have been trying to figure out what I could be doing to cause the problem. However, the screen goes blank in so many different situations that I cannot pin it down to a single program or operation.

    What happens is that when I open more than 2 operations at a time then the screen will go black. I do not believe it is realy locked up just no screen. Unfortunatly I have to reboot inorder to clear it up.

    One example of this is when I get to copying files from a flash drive to my hard drive or visaversa. I will open two copies of dolphin up and then just drag and drop the files from one to another and then try to do some surfing while the files copy. If I am coping a lot of large files it seems I wil lock up more often.

    I thought it might be a monitor problem or a memory problem but I can not find any setting that will keep this from happening. I would send a copy of a error report but I have no way to get one...

    I have gotten superb help from you on other issues and would like you thoughts on this on. It is the only issue left that I have with Kubuntu and hope to solve it as well so that I can claim it as my only operating system. The only reason I use windows is because I also run an internet sit off of the machine and need to make sure it is able to run everything I need every time. I do like this system and plan to keep it even once windows 7 goes live.

    Any help with this blanking window problem will be greatly appriciated.

    Thanks

    Try this,

    Kmenu > System settings > Look & Feel > Desktop

    Turn off desktop effects, try a few things like copying big files.

    This problem seem to affect ATi and Nvidia drivers more than Intel, but it depends on the model video card you have and what version of xorg you are running.

    If it is not this, do you have desktop effects set for screen saver after x minutes or any other possibilities that might cause the screen to blank - powersave, hibernate or suspend when battery is low?

      kevinc ;

      Thank you for your help. I did as you suggested and have done most of the operations that I was having problems with and have not locked up or gone blank yet.

      As far as you are concerned this is solved. Do you however know if there is a work around for this?

      Thanks for the help.

        I don't know of a workaround yet, but, there are reports that coming versions of xorg will enable all of the features of ATi and Nvidia cards and allow you to use desktop effects without problems such as you (and many others) have experienced. Look at some of the posts on problems with ATi video or Nvidia video (depending on your card).
