Kubuntu 9.04 - Logout popup randomly appears

My son is running Kubuntu 9.04 (so am I with no problems). At random the shutdown pop up appears, he doesn't always notice it, types something and the effect is to select Shutdown. Very annoying. This has been going on for months, 8.10 did the same thing. We have changed the PSU (at least twice), motherboard and processor (3 times); the current machine is just a few months old, everything except the case and DVD drive are new (inc the monitor)!!!

The light switch close to the machine was a dimmer which made a buzzing noise. I suspected RFI or mains interference so I replaced it with a standard switch, but the machine still has the problem. I am considering a fresh install but would appreciate some suggestions on how to stop this occurring. There are three more PC's in the house none have any problems just my sons' - his room might be the problem!!!

It have a hunch (99% likelyhood) that there is a setting in his user account. I would recommend adding a second user in his machine, and let him play there and see if it still bothers him. If not, he can move files over and be done.

Before that, I would check in System Settings -> Keyboard and Input Actions if there is any key binding producing this popup.

Thanks for the suggestion that the keyboard may be the source of the problem - I hadn't thought about the keyboard or mouse! My son also says sometimes when he presses the 'On' button, the machine won't switch 'On'. I guess this could also be caused by the keyboard.

We think Kubuntu is great; just this problem to overcome.

Ah, or it could be an issue with the cause where the ON button is shaky: some times, when you press it, it doesn't work. Sometimes, when you don't press it, it activates itself. This would prompt the logout dialog. If this is it, then you may want to look at the power settings in System Settings, and disable all actions, for all profiles, in case the power button is pressed. That might be the ticket!
