Flash With No Sound and Videos Freeze

I recently upgraded from Kubuntu Hardy Heron to Jaunty Jackelope, and for a while Firefox and everything related seemed to work. I suspect the problem started when I brought up aptitude and had it fix a bunch of packages which were broken because of some shoddy work by kpackagekit. Don't quote me on this, however, because I forget whether I was able to watch streaming videos before the "fix."

Now I find that I can play flash games (ex: Pandemic II via newgrounds) but they do not have any sound. Then when I try to watch videos on Youtube, they load for a while, then play the first second or two without any sound at all before it stops playing and loading (at which point I can fiddle with the buttons but nothing else).

I tried removing flashplugin-nonfree and reinstalling flashplugin-installer through aptitude, but that didn't seem to do anything. The problem is identical in both Firefox and Konqueror. Also, I know my system sound is working just fine, because I can play songs through Amarok before, during, and after all these difficulties, so I'm pretty sure Flash is at fault here.

Please help, and please be patient because I am still a linux novice.

Can you please install Synaptic and then refresh all sources, update all software and then test again?

Also, you can create a new user very easily from the System menu, can oyu add a fresh user and test there? YOu could have some local config bothering you, flash should be fine.

    Good luck!

Re: Flash With No Sound and Videos Freeze

I had this problem on a fresh Jaunty 8464 install. The problem was prevalent with Firefox 3.0.11, but with the recent upgrade to FF 3.0.12, this problem seemed to disappear.

When it was an issue though, I found that if I had Amarok opened, then flash videos would do the same. So check your FF version, and if it is still a problem, close Amarok and open up FF and then try.

Excellent point. Firefox access audio in a legacy way, while KDE applications use their own sound system. As far as I know, several KDE apps can share the sound access, but a non-kde app will be locked out. So, you need to make sure no one else is locking he audio, Amarok is one strong suspect since it sits in the system tray.

That did the trick! Thank you!

I wonder if/when I can get Firefox onto the new system...

As far as I can remember, Firefox had an update a couple of days ago. At least it did for me. So silly question, is your system up to date?
