Thunderbird2.0 not displaying

9.04/4.2.2

I run Thunderbird out of K > Internet > MozTbird
the password confirmation box comes up, I fill in pwd, it strips mail from mailserver
the program icon then disappears from taskbar, and no gui ever shows up

I've solved this a couple of times by remove, purge and reinstall, but now that isn't even working.

I don't know what to try next: is there a log somewhere that would explain this?
Any ideas?

What debug output is printed if you start it from the command line?

I've tried:
thunderbird
thunderbird %u
with no output at all- just straight back to prompt
