Opera - Installing in JJ -Cold Shoulder frm Ubuntu for Opera?

    Guys,

I understand that we can get opera frm http://deb.opera.com/opera/dists/ and also frm http://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/linux/ but i am wondering why opera is not in the repos.

there are enough reports in launchpad abt this....some have even attributed this to 'laziness'...

Anyway do u guys know of any ppa that provide opera?

    The Facts

The Opera is > About Opera Software

How to get The Opera > Ubuntu Community Documentation - Opera Browser

PPA's are > Personal Package Archives for Ubuntu

The Fiction ( a.k.a the pixies should do more work)

there are enough reports in launchpad abt this....some have even attributed this to 'laziness'...
    Well - Get Involved
    Development

Contribute by writing new software, packaging additional software, or fixing bugs in existing software.

    Why ?

Anyway do u guys know of any ppa that provide opera?
Hmm - ?? may i ask why a PPA repository ? The Opera Software is packaging the latest version to the debian packages (.deb). You could add their repository or download the deb and install it.

Why there are dead links ?

with a ppa, package management will be easier i.e when u want to do upgrades. But my understanding could be faulty.
      thanx anyway.

If you add opera's deb repository, you will get the upgrades with your package manager just the same as with ppas or ubuntu repos.

As far as packaging for the ubuntu repos, opera is not free software, and you probably can't distribute it without approval from opera software.

Also, as it is closed source, ubuntu cannot make any patches or modifications to it... including it in the repos would basically just mean adding the same package that is available from opera repos, which is kind of redundant (opera was in fact at one point in time available from a special 'ubuntu commercial' repository, along with a few other closed source apps like skype...even then, people usually used opera's repos as they were/are always up-to-date).

Incidentally, if I get a cheap netbook for my train commute I'll be able to contribute some code and fixes ...

Few words of the PPA repositories

The packages from the PPA repositories are more or less experimental, that is: "My system didn't explode - how about there ? " so Standard warning > Packaging/PPA
            ...
Important: You download and install PPA packages at your own risk. Ubuntu, Launchpad and Canonical do not endorse these packages. You must be certain that you trust the PPA owner before you install their software.
            ...

Of course there are more official repositories as the Kubuntu Backports but at the moment > kubuntu-devel -- Kubuntu Developer Discussion >> PPA support policy...
