    Former Gnome Guy needs your help

    Ok full disclosure .. i have been using linux now for almost 2 years.. and although i have tried over 25 distro at one time of the other am a full ubuntu guy in all sense of the world.. i have tried kde one time or the other but somehow i always find my self not spending mor the an hour on a kde desktop .. recently decided to try out the latest kde 4.3 desktop and now am hooked .. wont waste time to talk about the awesomeness of the kde 4.3 that has made it difficult to ever use gnome again ( that would be a story for another day)

    what i need are tips on how to get round some tiny issues am facing .. none is a deal breaker and i cxan always do without them but it would really be cool if i find a solution.

    Audio
    Audio on gnome is far from great .. pulse audio is a huge mess .. but because i have used the mess for quite a while all i need to do is killall -9 pulse audio and everything would be fine .. with kubuntu (9.04 kde 4.3 RC2) i sometimes have an issue where the audio doesnt start or where only one application an play sound at a time .. on such occassion what can be down .. does kubuntu uses pulse audio ? if not how can i always configure my sound to work fine on kubuntu

    2nd issue am having is skype .. while i was in gnome i use the dell image that came with my m1330 ( which is ubuntu preinstalled) and using skype with it just works (dell actually worked on the image because vanilla ubuntu doesnt work with skype out of the box) how can i configure skype to work on ubuntu?


    network folders

    on ubuntu i can just right click a directory and share the folder via samba .. and access shared folders can be done thru the network places .. how can i do same on kde ?

    bluetooth ..

    doesnt work at all on kubuntu even though its workss perfectly on gnome is there a workaround?

    configuring dual monitor on gnome i could easily connect an external monitor to my laptop and setup an extended desktop .. cant seem to do this on kde ..

    these are some of the issues am currently facing .. must have nothing to with kubuntu its self .. i just need someone to hold my hands on how kde those its thing .. thanks in advance

    Hi Bigbrovar, I think I know you from WorksWithU ?

    I think some of these issues may have to do with the fact that the KDE 4-3-rc s have been a bit buggy and unstable (lots of folks here had issues).

    Sharing folders: In Dolphin, Right Click, Properties, Share

    Sound: I have worked with no issues, multiple applications, both with and without Pulse Audio. Now I reinstalled it. Look in System Settings - Multimedia

    Skype: you need to go to Options and you can configure Audio and Video devices. It has woeked just fine on my eeepc, on my old 32 bit amd desktop and on my new amd desktop, all of them running different versions of skype and kubuntu/kde

    Dual Monitor: what graphics video are you using? With the open source ones you can use System Settings - Display for that; with binary drivers I think you use the drivers tools

      yeah could be , i have the site on my rss and usual drop in there once in a while to post a comment or 2

      well un the contrary kde 4.3RC has been quite stable.. in fact it runs a liquid on my laptop .. no crashes or slow than .. its a real killer app..

      wow that easy .. no compiling? fiddling with configs from commandline .. now that sucks

      well sound works here too just that somethings it fails and i would have to restart the whole system for things to be sane .. i dont think this is right .. there whould be a service that i could restart to bring sound back .. on gnome it was killall -9 pulseaudio

      u guess the question is which config works .. there are a bunch of options and its hard joggling them around ( i tried but it was no good)

      am using the Intel GMA 3100 i use the gnome display tool which works really well .. but when i try to do this in kde using the display tool in systemsettings .. it says the module for configuring dual monitor is not loaded ..

        Just want to note that i was able to solve my skype problems following this post http://techlogbook.wordpress.com/200...-810-intrepid/ worked like a charm

          Ah, yes, sorry, that app is called KMix, and yes, if the mic is disabled there it won't work in Skype or anything else. The same with Audio, if volumes get muted you need to go there.

          Sound: now that you mention it, it does happen to me about once a week or so, I have no sound anymore no matter what, and some times I need to restart the machine for that. Sometimes I think logging out, restarting the xserver and logging in is enough (I have multiple users). You may want to start a dedicated thread for "restarting the sound system", there might be an easy way ...

            For network you can go to dolphin and on the sidebar click network.
