    KDE 4.3 RC2 tray/notification behaviour?

    I added deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu jaunty main to my sources list and dist-upgraded.

    Code:
    $ kde4-config --version
    Qt: 4.5.0
    KDE: 4.2.96 (KDE 4.2.96 (KDE 4.3 RC2))
    kde4-config: 1.0
    The new tray seems to have the "i" notification icon permanently shown (greyed out), it is attached to the tray even when there are no notifications and cannot be hidden.

    Is there a way to restore the old behaviour so that it only appears when there is something to notify?

    Thanks in advance.

    I believe this new look, with the 'i' permanently displayed, is a new feature of KDE 4.3. I don't recall seeing a way to go back to the old approach, but after a few days I found I quite liked the new look - I hope you do too, if there's really no way to change it!

      Thanks for the reply. I think its a backward step TBH, we have the ability to hide icons which are rarely used and then they go a put a rarely used one (certainly in my case) there as a permanent fixture. I also notice if dolphin has a copy in progress I can click the notification icon and see its progress but can no longer pause or stop it as I used to be able.

      On the plus side, they've removed the top and bottom border from the tray which means I can shrink the panel more than I could before without half the tray icons disappearing.

        Notifications seem to be one of (k)ubuntu's 'Big New Things' at the moment: The Gnome flavour of Ubuntu makes big fuss about a new style of notifications in 9.04, and it looks like Kubuntu (well, KDE) is going for something similar in 9.10.

        Having said that, if you've ever seen Growl on the Mac (http://growl.info/) then you'll know just how amazing a fully integrated system-wide notification system can be. If (k)ubuntu's notifications end up anything like Growl I'll be very happy indeed.
