hardware drivers - selecting graphics drivers does nothing

Hi all i have tried installing graphics drivers under kde4.2 but it seems to just sit and do nothing but grey out the list, anyone else see this?

I'm going to have to install them via the ATi website.

Edit > I installed them via ATi website but the hardware drivers app doesn't show it as installed is that to be expected?

And now that i have installed them via the website, the hardware drivers app seems to want to work now, but if i use that it will now install the older drivers from the repo.

I did not have good luck with that Hardware Drivers (or "jockey-kde") utility either, and I haven't attempted to use it anytime lately. Your report sounds like my experience.

One thing to remember is that it actually has to download the driver package in the background, so the user will be subjected to a considerable wait with no feedback -- it feels like "nothing happening" for quite awhile, so a lot of patience is also required when it actually works.

In ubuntu it will show a bouncing progress bar and "do nothing" for a while, but in kubuntu the list just got greyed out and it really did do nothing, but now i have the drivers from ATi website, the jockey app seems to want to work.

I am running 64bit is that usually more buggy than 32bit?

        No, not in my experience.

BTW, in Kubuntu, "grayed out" does not mean "nothing happening" -- it only means "no feedback available for you at this moment".

Grayed out usually turns into "color miraculously returns" if you wait a bit.

Actually i figured it out, first run you click activate, the list greys out and it does nothing, close it and open again, click activate the the permission window asks for your password, then it seems to work perfectly.
