gdebi software install problem

I can't get gdebi to work. I have the following pkgs installed, gdebi, gdebi core and gdebi kde, It worked once but now doesn't. I've done a purge and then reinstalled the above pkgs.
Is there some way to make gdebi default for installing deb pkgs?
Another question? Synapatic will not open either.
All these work on another box so I'm very confused.

It's always difficult to know why "X" didn't happen, when it was expected.

So, you open Dolphin, you right-click on your favorite .deb, and you choose "open with ..." and what happens? You don't see Gdebi on the list of choices?

Do you get any error message if you launch the gdebi-kde from the konsole:

gdebi-kde /path/to/the/deb/package.deb

Got gdebi working, just edit the command to gdebi-kde.
