Hah! Yeah, I figured it is generally best to stick with the repo packages. I depend on my computer for 10-12 hours of work daily so I can't be breakin' stuff.

From the Un-authorized Linux Dictionary of Hidden Meaning:

dist[roy]-upgrade (v. \di-ˈstrȯi-uhp-grād) 1. to remove the quality, value, effectiveness, or performance of the current operating system.

Windows no longer obstructs my view.

This would be awesome on a shirt. I will have to see if I can lay something out that looks awesome.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but whenever I've done a dist-upgrade for family and friends on their computers over the past year and a half, everything just worked. Except, there was on issue once with the HP driver for an ancient all-in-printer. Or, maybe it is because they don't geek tweak their computers.

I am, and have been, a firm believer that if one starts with a "clean" system, and doesn't go mucking about in it's innards, that one will continue to have a working system, even with dist-upgrades. It's important to understand, that dist-upgrades are designed to work (generally/usually/mostly) with a system that hasn't been (severely) modified by the user.

Just to add my 2 cts, I' ve always upgraded distributions. I did it back in the day with mandrake->iva (even though everyone and their mother would swear that you needed a clean install), and then with Kubuntu. I did find a gitch or two, but it's a lot better than a clean install IMHO. At least, let me say this, at least for _my_ needs. This is in huge contrast with Windows, which is universally admitted to degrade very quickly in time (as mentioned by one of you folks above, was it GreyGeek?)
