Shame on UbuntuOne - how to remove it?

Got an invitation to UbuntuOne today and was interested to test things out.

Went to the site to find out more and found the installation instructions. First step was to install the PPA. Ok. No big deal, have installed a few PPA's before. They had a button and it led to a download of a .deb package. "Nice, they have a smarter way of doing this!". So I started up the installetion of the .deb package and answered YES when I got the question about installing it.

No more information about what it was installing. No more questions.

So after it finished, I started to look around to see if it had installed anything more, because it was obviously adding more than a PPA (downloading for some time).

I found to my disbelief that it had installed a few Gnome programs (and no doubt dependencies) that I did not need, did not want and was never asked if I wanted installed!

This is totally disrespectful and dishonest. If you say you are going to install a PPA, then you install a PPA. Not a bunch of extra crap! This is a tactic that is much more worthy Canonicals Redmont competitor!

As you might understand, I am really angry at this point and want this crap out of my computer immediately. I want control on everything that goes into my system. It is running very OK now, and I want to know what I am installing.

Do anyone know of a way to find out what the last install added to your system? Is there a log somewhere that lists this?

    I guess:

    Code:
    sudo cat /var/log/apt/term.log

        My pleasure

I am also a bit disappointed at Canonical enterprise initiatives. They promote free (libre) software, but they produce proprietary software. This is in sharp contrast with Red Hat. Oh well, don't get me cool, Mark is the coolest guy in the planet, I just think he's not making a good decision in that regard ...

Re: Shame on UbuntuOne - how to remove it?

Now I just need to figure out how to remove it without removing stuff that is needed by other programs.

I guess I can start with removing Synaptic... Here is the log for that installation. I think it is a bit too much for a package that was supposed to install two lines of text in the sources and the key for it. The name of the package was ubuntuone-jaunty-ppa.deb and further gives the impression that it is only the ppa that will be installed:

Yeah... I do not mind the libs as long as I know about it. But Synaptic etc. is just... Let us just say it totally got my engine started

Not often I get angry about stuff like this, but seems I have a lot of energy today - lol

After removing the initial package, this command should automatically remove all packages that were installed to satisfy dependencies
                Code:
                sudo apt-get autoremove

Good tip! Though use gtkorphan because it gives you more granularity (sometimes I don't feel like removing all the suggested packages).

Problem is, I do not know what the initial package was. It came as a .deb file and it did not give any information at all while installing. So it is a bit difficult...

I doubt trying the deb file name will do it as that is only a installation script that installs a bunch of packages.

                      On second thought -

Is there a way to "open" a .deb package to see the instructions it used?

searching for ubuntuone in kpackagekit will also show what the package is called, and you can remove it from there (but not the added deps - many of which are python-related, and not necessarily gnome/gtk specific)

                          sudo apt-get remove ubuntuone-client I believe.

The product is still considered beta, and as such is definitely gnome-oriented (or rather nautilus oriented) for its gui, though it will work as Dropbox does, by syncing the contents of your ~/ubuntuone folder. Ubuntu is a Gnome-centric distro after all, and at this stage I personally an not upset by the lack og KDE integration. I did note that Canonical were looking to hire a KDE/QT developer, so maybe something is possibly in the works for the future

While the server part is currently proprietary, the client is open source. There has not been any work on a KDE client afaik. Though anyone is free to do so

[btw I do subscribe to the paid service]

Thank you to all. I will try the suggested actions here.

My gripe is not the dependencies that got installed or anything related to Gnome. My problem is the way it was done. I expected two lines of text, and instead I got a bunch of libraries and a couple of software packages!

To be trusted as a company, you have to communicate clearly and do exactly what you are saying you are going to do.

So in this case, as they require a lot more than these two lines of text, they should have warned about this and given me the option to cancel the whole thing.

I am looking forward to be able to use this service sometime in the future, and I am sure other interesting things will come out of it as well (remote help has been mentioned).
