    Unable to switch to Konsole

When in the system Ctrl + Alt + F1 should switch me to tty konsole - but it doesn't. When I switch now - just a black screen.

Another way I know is to select konsole session when logging in, instead of KDE,
but this option doesn't work as well. Last year when I had that problem I just pressed Ctrl Alt F1 again, but it doesn't work any more now

    - What could be wrong? It used to work normally.

Do any of the tty logins work (Ctrl-Alt-F1/F2...F6)?

Can you open a Terminal window (Start...Applications...System...Terminal)?

Do you have an nVidia graphics card, if so see this post:

    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...screen-385376/

This doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem - keep googling it until you find the answer, it's out there somewhere.

Thank you for sending link. None of F1 ... F6 works.
Info from link doesn't help as well. It was working, and suddenly it stopped.

      This gets annoying...

If you Ctrl-Alt-F1 and get the black screen, can you then press Alt-F2 and get a terminal?

          No.

I was trying all combinations. It seems that only Ctrl+Alt+Del works

What happens when you select "console session" from the sessions menu at login?

Re: Unable to switch to Konsole

Could be a locale problem. Make sure that the output of

              Code:
              cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf|grep XkbLayout
              and

              Code:
              locale
are congruent. This usually happens when KDM kicks in with its xorg.conf settings which block the rest of the world.

                [quote=toad ]

Dibl: when I switch to konsole session from login menu it happens exactly the same - black screen and nothing works. Ctrl + Alt + F7 will switch me eventually back to login page or Ctrl + Alt + Del will soft reboot.

Toad: I don't really know what to do with two commands you sent me. In my X11 I have xorg.conf backup and xorg.conf failsafe files. I can't "cat" it. Also - how to compare with locale? Where do I find locale ?

Re: Unable to switch to Konsole

It's either the locale problem that toad said, or else the video driver is corrupted or something. You haven't told us about your graphics hardware and what driver you are using, if any -- that may be relevant to the problem.

There is not really much more I can say but to compare the output of the two commands I listed. If you are unsure as to what they mean I suggest you look at the man pages, wikipedia and of course google is your friend

I have nVIDIA GeForce 7000M. I ma using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.51-pkg2 driver.

I don't know if that's relevant but (practically) every time new headers come with update, I can't start computer - black screen. I need to reinstall drivers. Last time I have done that - I had been asked should existing setting be overwritten. Than some errors came up, but everything was working fine... until now when I realized I can't switch to konsole.

Could that be corrupted driver you mentioned ?

Yes, a new nVidia kernel module has to be built for every new kernel, using either (a) the "Hardware Drivers" aka jockey-kde function or (b) the downloaded nVidia installer. I would advise you to re-install the nVidia driver, using whichever means you used the last time. If you use the downloaded installer, you need first to install the linux-headers-`uname -r` package, and also the build-essential package.

This doesn't lead me anywhere - I was looking for information about locale and xorg configuration and I still don't understand the point, what I shall do and look for.

As for reinstalling drivers on new headers - that's what I am trying to do but first I need to switch to tty, stop kde and than do the job, but because I can't switch to terminal - I also can't do that...

I Just came back to the loop

Boot recovery mode -- that will put you at a terminal. Plus, you could run the "Fix X" routine and see if that gives you a GUI that will switch to a terminal.

Boot recovery mode doesn't want to do - it says there is a problem and booting in normal mode is required.

I am sending output from my var/log/xorg.0.log
(there is one more old version of this file, if that will be useful which differs from this one).
With my basic knowledge - that problem is a bit too much for me.
                              Please help.
