    [solved] KPackageKit Problem

    I am running kubuntu 9.04 (AMD 64).

When trying to install new software, I get the following message:

Dialog box title: Cannot get lock - System Settings

Dialog box: Cannot get the exclusive lock on the packaging backend. Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open.

Details: Only use one package management programme at the same time.

I need help! I am not very knowledgeable about linux commands --- probably do know enough to get myself in trouble.

If you need additional information, please be specific.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: KPackageKit Problem

the error message indicates that u may have additional package managers running ( backend running ). one way to verify would be to open up a konsole and type 'sudo ps -ef'.

See if there are any lines with terms like packagekit. Then look at the PID of that line and kill it with 'sudo kill -9 pid'

      Thanks.

I did not find anything with "package kit" to kill.

Below is the output of sudo ps -ef. Any suggestions?

ok. lets try to bypass kpackagekit then and try apt-get from the commandline directly.

        do;

        1. sudo apt-get update
        2. sudo apt-get install packagename

where u replace packagename with the software that u would like to install.

lets see what error messages ( if any ) apt-get (which is the real workhorse , not kpackagekit ) throws out.

if u are not sure what is the actual packagename, u can try sudo apt-get search briefpackagename which will give possible matches.

When sure there is no other (front end to a) package manager running it is possible the so-called lock file was left behind or orphaned.
Just delete it and try again.

          This is the file: /var/lib/dpkg/lock

there are quite a few things to try there.

Pls note that on my system the lock file is present and i have no problems.

              Thanks. Still not quite working.

u can also try to remove that package first by 'sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-plugin'
