Editing textfiles on remote server through ftp (with Kate?)

I am slowly discovering some ways of working with webpages that are really nice. Using Firebug to test design options is a really cool way of doing things. It even tell you what file and linenumber you are working on.

But when I want to actually change these things in the files, I need to edit them and it can be a bit difficult to do through cPanel as it does not show the linenumbers.

So I was thinking that there should be a way for Kate to be able to open a file via ftp, cahce it locally and update it on the server when I click save? I love the editing features of Kate and prefer to stick with only one text editor for files like this if I can.

Any good tips on how to do this?

No SSH available. It has to be FTP.

    Does the server support ssh?

Apparently you can use the fish (ssh) protocol (KIO) with Kate, since KDE 3.5 (I hope this functionality wasn't lost in KDE 4)

Arrgg, but ftp is another KIO slave. If they added support to files over KIO, I doubt it's ssh specific? Maybe you can try to do the same as this guy in the linux journal posted with ftp:// ?

I edit remote files with kate via ftp all the time. You use either konqueror to connect to and browse the ftp server, or use Dolphin's Network section and use "add network folder' to add the ftp server location and browse with Dolphin. Nothing special needed. It does work with a local copy then saves the changes back to the server when saving your document.
