Installing Nvidia drivers

I see there is a updated nvidia driver 185.18.14 which is way newer than the 180.44 driver on my system. I looked because I get a lot of flickering on my screen. Is this driver really as easy to install as nvidia says on their site ex: below..

Type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run" to install the driver. NVIDIA now provides a utility to assist you with configuration of your X server configuration file. Please see Chapter 3 of the README or run 'man nvidia-xconfig' for details on usage. Instructions for those wishing to edit their X config file by hand can also be found in the README.

Also, is it advisable to install it? If it is, should it be installed another way? Thank you.

Follow the procedural guidance here:

You should not need to hand edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file after running the installer. Just follow the steps. Post back if there's trouble. If you installed 180.44 using System>Hardware Drivers, then you'll need to follow the first part where you delete the nvidia-glx stuff.

Right -- "not for production systems, only for testers" is the advice.

However, FYI, I installed it -- it is running Compiz and Emerald. No issues in the first 5 minutes .....

What is the deal with the Hardware drivers application? I never see any suggested updates for it, and know there are newer drivers than the v. 180 driver I am using at the moment. Thought there would be a ppa or something like that for the nVidia drivers too... Lucky for me, it is behaving pretty ok, but I get some flickering after a while some days and have not been able to find out what triggers it.

Used to think it was Quassel, because everytime I let the computer on with Quassel running, I got the flickering, but I have also had it a couple of times without Quassel, so it can not be only that...

I've been running 190.09 since the Russians snuck it out unauthorized 3 weeks ago. Yesterday I installed the official beta, 190.16 (although I had no problems with 190.09). It seems to be fine -- I have not found anything I can't do with it -- Compiz runs great, the browser runs flash however I want -- very nice.

I dunno about the Hardware Drivers thing (jockey-kde). I have tried it and had it work correctly, and other times I have tried it and fallen asleep waiting for something to happen. It doesn't seem reliable. Plus, no Beta drivers, so you're stuck with whatever is officially released, and that's it. Here you go:

Check it out -- Win XP running a MS Visual Foxpro database on a VM, alsaplayer and conky running, browser and an enlarged glxgears. All at 1600 x 1200, and nothing breaks!
