Like Fintan said, if you use kmail/kontact for email (I assume you use a mail client since you have pop accounts as well), it can handle your gmail and pop accounts and has a built in system tray notifier icon that can inform you of new messages (configuration is in Kmail Settings>Appearance>System tray)
The built in notifier has an advantage over most "separate" notifiers in that it updates the new message status "live" instead of timed intervals. Once you've read a message in kmail, the new mail count drops immediately instead of the next time notifier updates the message status. Of course you need to set up kmail to check your accounts periodically.
