    How to fix/revert to 4.2.4 from 4.3 beta 2

This morning KPackageKit reported that I have 83 blocked updates. So I executed "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". Logged out, and restarted x-server.
Apparently I have one of the experimental/backports repos that had KDE 4.3 beta 2, because that is what I have now. The problem is that at least Plasma is very broken. No wallpaper, kickof shows up at the top of the screen, system try doesn't show any icons...

How do I go back to 4.2.4 or fix 4.3 (or is it supposed to be like that?).

Wait a few hours, in the meantime. Kill plasma and install some other light window manager.

BTW: Can someone direct me to a very light window manager to use in situations like this? It should be possible to run kde applications from it and I don't want a set of new apps.

icewm works very well for me. Its
easy to customize the menus and
you have a DM to use until kde is
      fixed.

I'd suggest LXDE. It uses OpenBox as the basis (which is easily one of the lightest, fastest WMs out there) but it adds those modern conveniences like a panel, normal menu, etc. Actually it's a fair bit like a very trimmed down KDE 3.5, in a way. Also, unlike many of the slim WMs/DEs, it's still in active development so it supports much more modern behaviours and applications.

It runs KDE 4 apps just fine; actually it's what I've been using for the past while on my laptop, since KDE4.2 seems to still choke it (mainly from bugs in plasma) but I like to use Kontact, Konqueror, Kopete, KWallet, etc.

You can also try doing a "sudo apt-get install kde-core". That way you will install any packages needed to start KDE that might have been lost during the update

Same thing happened to me, so I went ahead and added kde 4.3 beta 2 repo from here:

              https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+...e/experimental

Basically, just add the following lines to your /etc/apt/source.list file:

              deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa...imental/ubuntu jaunty main
              deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa...imental/ubuntu jaunty main

                Kill plasma and do:

                Code:
                rm .kde/share/config/plasmarc
                rm .kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
                then restart plasma.

If that does not work wait a few hours as mentioned by Rizado
