trouble with Kate and other K Editors

    Grey Geek, thanks for your input. I see that you also have the same chipset - Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07). The only difference is the subsystem. I have a 'Toshiba America Info Systems Device 000d' whereas you have 'Sony Corporation Device 9035'. For you KDE is working fine, including Kate and all the other editors! This is surprising indeed! So does it mean that my problem is not due to Graphics Card, but due to something else?

    Well for now I have switched from KDE to Gnome. I try to avoid all KDE applications. But still I am facing some problems. My system is surprisingly slow. My system configuration:
    - Toshiba Protege
    - Processors: Intel Core 2 Duo running at 1.2Ghz speed
    - Memory: 1.8GiB

    It becomes especially slow when I run firefox with 4-5 windows open and each of them having 4-5 tabs open. When I do the same thing on firefox on Windows Vista, the machine seems to run fine. It doesn't slow down. I thought the problem is with firefox. So I tried installing Opera. But Opera is worse. It just crashes down when I try to open 4-5 windows.

    So all this makes me wonder if the problem is somewhere deeper. I don't know!

      A quasi measurement of your overall cpu speed is given by "bogomips", in red. What is yours?

      My CPU speed is almost twice yours, and so is my RAM. Those two differences could account for all the differences in speed between your machine and mine.

      FireFox is not slow for me. I never run more than one FireFox instance at a time. I use as many tabs as I want, however. However, the GM45 video chip is a midrange performance chip, even when running under VISTA. When HAL figures out what my video chip is it always selects the i915 driver.

        Firefox, and its little friends Flash and Java can consume a surprising amount of CPU time. If you open a "top" window, or use "htop", and observe what goes on while you open Firefox and proceed to browse and open some tabs, you may be surprised. I run my Core 2 Extreme overclocked at 3.4 GHz, and with the nVidia GTX260 one would think running a browser would not even bump the CPU resource figure, but it sure does. And if "npviewer" (a flash process) happens not to close correctly, things can get really crazy.

          Yes Greygeek and Dibl, my machine is slow. I did not realize it earlier. This was recently given to me by my boss to work on.

          For my i915 and drm are smaller.

          So my machine is just slow. Probably this along with the driver for the intel graphics card is causing the problem with KDE applications? It is also causing the performance to be less.

            Intel is to be commended, in general, for open-sourcing their drivers. However, the release of X.org 1.6 has not been kind to Intel -- the 'net is full of problem reports on Intel video chips with the new releases of *buntu and other Linux distributions.

              I finally found the reason that is causing my system to slow up. I shifted from KDE to Gnome on Ubuntu 9.04. But my system is still slow. I knew something was eating up my CPU cycles, but I could not figure out what it was. I was using Gnome System monitor to find what all processes are running. In that everything was fine.

              But when I ran 'top' from a terminal I saw that 'XOrg' was hogging my CPUs. It was keeping the CPUs busy at 70% to 80%. It was not firefox or any other application but Xorg. Greygeek, do you face any such problem? So Dibl, Xorg is also causing trouble for GDE. May be next I should try changing my distribution.

              Probably I should also post this issue on Ubuntu forums.

                  Like I wrote, it is a 9 month old Sony VAIO VGN-FW140E/H. A 64 bit Centrino2 dual core with 3GB of RAM and a 180 GB HD. The video chip is the same as yours, and HAL selects the i915 Intel video driver for it.

                        There is nothing in my xorg.conf file. HAL takes care of the video configuration.

                        An interesting experiment would be to install the 64bit version of Kubuntu and compare its speed with the 32 bit version. It may be as much as 20% faster.
