[SOLVED] Shared Home for Jaunty 32 and 64 bit?

    Hi.

I am running 32 bit and 64 bit installations of Jaunty on the same computer. I am wondering if it would be smart to have a shared home folder?

My home folder has it's own partition (actually there are two home partitions, one for each system). Could I use only one partition or should i do this with symbolic links?

I don't think there will be a problem using a 32bit and 64 bit version with the same home, However quite a bit of settings for things are saved in your /home folder, be sure you want to do this before you do it..

Yes it can be a tricky situation. But I would still like to hear from people who have tried this.

IIUIC, as long as you use a different username for each OS, then sharing a /home partition shouldn't be a problem. If however, you use the same username in each OS, using a shared /home isn't advisable (dangerous even ?). Why? Because of the various (hidden) configuration files that get written to /home.

I assume you want to use the same home partition mostly for the datafiles you have and want to share between installations. I have a simular setup with a seperate partition for the datafiles and I symlink them to the homedir.

            My mountpoints:

            devicemountpoint
            /dev/sda1/install1, currently jaunty
            /dev/sda2/install2, currently karmic beta
            /dev/sda5/media/home
            /dev/sda6swap

On every install I add symlinks in that homedir to the corresponding directory's on the partition that is mounted on /media/home. For example:

            ln -s /media/home/tecumseh/Pictures Pictures
