Re: [Quasi-solved] About to give up on Kubuntu (many, many errors)

I always do the hard drive partitioning in advance of installing Linux, and with a different tool -- I've seen various things go wrong with the "inline" partitioner, such that I don't trust it. Lately I have preferred the Parted Magic Live CD tool, from here:

    http://partedmagic.com/

although at least two versions of the Gparted Live CD are still in my little toolbag:

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...kage_id=173828

From the early days of DOS, the design of PC hard drives and their controllers has permitted a maximum of 4 primary partitions. A fully satisfactory Linux installation on a single hard drive will use three, one for the OS, one for swap, and one for user data (can be used for "/home", but doesn't necessarily need to be). Up until Win XP, the MS product only needed a single partition. Vista and its successor apparently require a minimum of two, so now dual-booting with the new MS products presents somewhat of a challenge to the person who wants his/her data in a separate partition. You'll have to use logical partitions in an extended partition to dual boot with Vista or Win 7. I'm personally happy to keep my Redmond products on a VMWare VM in Linux, to minimize viral and other undesirable side-effects from running them on a direct installation. Looks like this:

I only used the /boot partition because it was recommended if using the JFS file structure. Once I went to EXT4, it was no longer needed. I didn't know of any benefits to keeping it around, so I got rid of it.

Thanks for the input, but I'm afraid I'm already a couple steps ahead of you there. I've been using a gparted CD to make the partitions beforehand-- I only used the Kubuntu installer to make them once, and that was because it was automated. =) Other than that, I just reformat the filesystems with the installer and that's it.

Also, as for the partition information, much of that I already knew from previous experience, but thank you anyway. However, if I may offer a correction: Vista doesn't require two partitions (can't speak for 7 yet). What you may have seen is an OEM PC with a second restore partition-- something OEMs have been doing to cut down on recovery CD production.

As for the virtualization, you've already tried selling it to me. I appreciate the idea, but I would simply prefer not to, as my experience has been generally unsatisfactory compared to non-virtual installations (and trust me, I've done it plenty in the past, especially when 2000 and XP came out and I still had a boatload of 98 apps). Nowadays, I use a good amount of multimedia applications, such as audio/video editing (Audition, Premiere, etc), so I need the direct connection between the software and the hardware that I use. Yes, even on the laptop.

Thanks again for the ideas. While I present myself as a novice with Kubuntu & linux, I assure you I'm not a novice with computer concepts.

So, in the end, despite passing multiple HD long tests using Seatools, the hard drive eventually starting doing the Click of Death, ceased responding, and I finally returned it. I'll post again after getting a replacement hard drive (a 250GB Momentus 7200.4, for any curious) to say if I ran into any problems setting everything up on that one as well (god, I hope not).

Thanks to everyone for all your help! (Particularly to dibl, who called it right from the beginning.)

You're very welcome, and I'm sorry about the hard drive.
