    Error message in software updates

I have installed Kubuntu 9.04 as quest on VMWARE with XP as the host.
My PC is an Athlon 64 with a dual 5200 processor.

I have been trying to add repositories to get Amarok working, but I get the following message when I update:

Cannot get the exclusive lock on the packaging backend.
Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open.

    Can anyone advise?

Are you trying to use two tools at the same time? If I have adept open and type apt-get update in a terminal window I get that message.

No, I don't have adept or synaptic installed. maybe kate is running in the background somehow.

There is a lock-file that sometimes is not deleted automatically. If you are absolutely sure you are not running any package-manager or the like you can delete it manually. On my system it is /var/lib/dpkg/lock

        Have you tried simply rebooting?

Solved Re: Error message in software updates

I tried to delete the lock file - that didn't fix the fault. I got brave and tried to uninstall/install Kate, that didn't happen but I got a lot of instructions which I followed and that seems to have fix the problem.
