SOLVED via WORKAROUND - What is the best CD ripper for Kubuntu? EAC in WindowsXP

I have seen some people talk about Rubyripper as the EAC of Linux. But as far as I can see it is a Gnome based application and I wonder if there is an application of this class for Kubuntu?

Specifically I am thinking about the accuracy of the ripper. The perfect thing would be support for AccurateRip - http://www.accuraterip.com/, but as far as I know, nothing like this exist on Linux yet? It is actually very strange. Seems like a closed source program in Windows is the ultimate tool for the job :-)

Any suggestions? If nothing exists in Linux, I will have to use the dual boot for that...

EAC works great on Wine, as does imgburn. I gave up looking for replacements for either of these a long time ago.

Edit: Might as well forget about dual booting now. Virtualbox running Windows XP should give you all you need.

Is there anything wrong with K3b? It worked a treat, the last time I needed to rip a CD.

I have no idea what kind of error checking method K3b uses. Do you? And working fine for you might be a different thing for me, people have different preferences. I want to rip to FLAC and I want to make sure the rip is absolutely correct, no errors. The absolutely best I have found is EAC, but that only exists for Windows. I am not going to install Wine again as I have Windows XP in VirtualBox in addition to dual boot on this PC. So it is better to boot into WindowsXP and run EAC if I can not find something that matches it in Linux.

Another great feature of EAC is the ability to rip even pretty damaged CD's by slowing down and reading it over again, several times. But the support of AccurateRip is the most important for me.

Ok... Let me make myself completely clear - yes, I know there are a lot of programs out there. I am not searching for ANY ripper program. I am looking for THE best solution for KUBUNTU. And if that is not better than EAC on Windows, I will simply use that.

I am not interested in tutorials or lengthy documents on setup etc. I am interested in your opinions and suggestions and especially WHY you think your solution is better than EAC (Exact Audio Copy for those that have not tried it). It is not enough to say that an application support ripping to FLAC, you need to know how well the ripping is done, what level of error checking that involves and how the program handles errors.

This is quite a bit over the level of just an average MP3 rip, I am ripping my whole CD collection, and I have no need to do that over again. So it will be ripped to FLAC and I need to get that done flawless. One way of doing it is using a database called AccurateRip where you can check if your rip is ok.

Soo.... after this rant - any suggestions? :-)

I don't think that expecting people to read the original post and answer that instead of answering something totally different is to ask too much? In my original post, I stated that I would use dual boot. And I also stated I was looking for a program for Kubuntu. Not Gnome, not Windows. Wine does not make EAC into a Linux application, it is merely a workaround.

This thread is not only for me, it is also for a lot of other people that I see looking for exactly this kind of application.

I know there are many levels of satisfaction when it comes to audio. For some, a quick and dirty rip to 128kb MP3 is totally ok. For me, that is destroying the sound totally. I work with sound and picture, and I need better quality. I also know what happens with errors if a program does not do the ripping the right way. This is why I am concerned with how the program actually works when it detects errors and it is really a genuine concern. It has nothing to do with attitude, it is merely a different expectation from a tool.

On top of this, my first language is not English, so I am not into the finer details of it. So if I have offended you in any way, I really apologize.

Yes, and I will change the title as well.

I am still hoping that some day there will be something arriving for Kubuntu. As for EAC, I prefer to run it in Windows. I had Wine on the PC, but uninstalled it after trying to install a couple of programs and realised there is way too much tinkering to be done if you want to make it work.

Right now, I have a dual boot PC. I have Windows XP and Kubuntu. And I have Windows XP in VirtualBox. This covers all the needs for a Windows environment for me. So what I have been searching high and low for, is a native Kubuntu solution. I already knew before starting this thread that EAC worked under Wine. But it is always good to be reminded :-)

Re: What is the best CD ripper for Kubuntu?

k3b, just like many other applications in linux, simply is a graphical front end.
so, discussing how accurate is k3b at ripping cds is, to say the least, inappropriate.
it's the backend software that counts.
                      ttbomk k3b uses cdparanoia.
which does as good a job as any other software (including eac) at decoding cds.
the big deal is with c2 errors and c2 errors correction (mostly due to scratches/dirt/bad cd/bad cd-r).
ttbomk eac handles c2 error correction, cdparanoia doesn't.
it should however be noted that:
                      - most c2 errors are corrected automatically by the (decent) cd-r
                      - most cd-r can't even report c2 errors information correctly
for all the rest, the differences we talk about are differences the human hear can't usually detect.

I understand that you may have had problems with Wine in the past. Really though, with the latest version 1.1.22, EAC is as stable as running natively on Windows. You can always rip a cd in Wine, then on WinXP and check that both rips are identical. I did this a couple of years ago and they were. Here is the relevant page from Wine appdb:

I wish I really knew how to answer this question. Just another thing to learn. I am glad to see that someone finally addressed the question. Any further discussion to help me know more about the ripping and encoding would be appreciated.

Edit: This thread has nothing to do with running Wine.

Not very past :-) Only a few weeks! But thank you for that link. It was interesting reading. But I will definitely try EAC via WindowsXP in VirtualBox.

jankushka - Do you know if any work is being done to add AccurateRip and C2 error correction (if the CD drive support it) to any application in Linux? Or if it is on the roadmap of any application?

I am learning somethings here, Oceanwatcher, and would like a little clarification. I have looked at your accurate rip link and am starting to work with rubyripper. From what I am reading the benefit of accuraterip is to compare your rip with someone elses. I expect the intent is to have so many rips to compare with that you increase the accuracy. I have already noted at least one instance of a person with a rare CD being told that his rip is not good, over and over, even though his CRC comes our great. This indicates a weakenssof accuraterip, in that you don't know who, or how many, or ripped under what conditions you are comparing to. Given that how much value is there in the accuraterip?

From what I am learning the process for getting a good rip is to read multiple times and compare the CRC. This sounds exactly like the accuraterip method, except that you know more about the conditions when you do it yourself. It seems that this is what Rubyripper adds to cdparanoia and what EAC does. With the opensource software one can see exactly what is done. Does EAC inform the users of exactly how many reads they use and how they handle discrepancies? How would we make a good comparison? Is there a way to really know? Compare to the master recordings? Are they available? Have you seen any reports of such a test?

I want to point out that using GTK does not make an app a Gnome app. Rubyripper does use GTK but it is not integrated into gnome any more than GIMP is. There are numerous good apps like this, and I understand more of them are distancing themselves from Gnome everyday.
