ChoqoK - new version and a couple of tips

For the last few weeks, I have been using ChoqoK for my Twitter updates as well as Identi.ca updates. Yesterday a new version was released, v. 0.6 and if you want to get it way before it enters the official repo's, you can get it from

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~neversfelde/+archive/ppa

Just change the drop down to whatever version you are using - if you do not already know it, 9.04 was called Jaunty Jackalope during development. Otherwise, the procedure is the same as for all ppa's.

Connecting to the various services is quite straight forward. Just be aware of one thing. In the account settings, the first on the list is something called Alias. This is just what is elsewhere called Account name and it has to be unique. So e.g. use the name of the service and your nick or something else. It will only be used on the tab for this particular account, it is not sent to the service you are connecting to.

Twitter and identi.ca are pretty much self explanatory. But you can also add any type of Laconica account. And this is the setup for that:

Alias: Whatever you want, but unique
    Service: Custom Laconica
Homepage: The main page of the server, e.g. http://kvitre.no/
Username: You username at this server in all lowercase. Do not add the server or anything else.
    Password: *********
Direction: Leave as it is unless you use a language that writes in the opposite direction.

You might get a dialog box asking for the password. Give it and you should be all set.

In ChoqoK, the @replies to you will be in the Reply tab for each account, and your direct messages will be in the Inbox. To send a reply to anyone, there is a small icon under their avatar when you hover the mouse over it. Here you also find the Favorite and ReTweet button. It is called ReTweet even if it is not a Twitter account

On the File menu, you find a few interesting things. You can set ChoqoK to send "Now playing..." messages according to what you are listening to in Amarok. The exact wording of that message can be adjusted in the settings. You can also do a search in the services you are using and in the window that comes up, you can set it to auto-update the results so that you catch new occurrences of your search term.

All in all I think ChoqoK is a very good microblogging client and it has replaced the others that I was using. The one I used most was Twhirl, but Twhirl and Adobe Air frequently ate up more than half of my processor capacity and caused the heat to rise a lot. And I can not think of anything at the moment that is missing in ChoqoK. It is going to be interesting to see what will be added in the future!

Edit: Just realised that there might be people reading this that are either new to Twitter/Identi.ca/microblogging in general or has not tried it yet. For those that are not using this yet, there are a lot of good guides on the net. Just do a Google search for it. And for those that are new, here are a couple of quick tips:

EVERYTHING you write is public! So if you do not want anyone else to see it, don't write it!

If you want to indicate that a posting is meant for one particular person, you put @username in the beginning. So if you want to send a message to me on Twitter, you start the message with @oceanwatcher . The same goes for identi.ca and the other microblogging servers.

Identi.ca has something called groups and you can make sure your posting ends up in the group by putting a ! in front of the group name. To add something to the choqok group, you should join as a member on this webpage - http://identi.ca/group/choqok - and put !choqok in the message.

Tags: Another thing that has become very popular is to put tags, or keywords, in a posting to make it easier to track or find posts about a specific subject. The # symbol is used to tell that a word is a tag/keyword and often added at the end of a post. #choqok

Do you have any other good tips for using ChoqoK or microblogging in general?

Re: ChoqoK - new version and a couple of tips

I've been running the latest version (0.6.6) on Kubuntu 9.04/KDE4.3 for the past week (installed from http://ppa.launchpad.net/neversfelde/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main).

I have a question about read/unread tweets....everything I've read online about Choqok indicates that:

    a) the system tray icon should display a tool tip indicating how many unread status there are;
    b) when you click on the tray icon to display the application window, unread messages show a different background color; and
    c) when you minimise the application window, all unread messages are marked as read.

Can someone confirm if this is still the case with 0.6.6? I don't see any of this behaviour. When I put my mouse pointer over the green system tray icon (doesn't matter whether the Choqok window is shown or hidden), there is no tooltip message...even when I know that there are tweets that I haven't read.

Similarly, when I display the Choqok window; there is no indication of which ones are new (unread)....so every morning when I get to the office I need to think "now what was the last one I saw yesterday?".

Is this a bug, or is there something I can configure to enable the read/unread indicators?

(My notification settings are currently: KNotify, Show all statutes in one notification, duration 15 seconds. I've tried turning off notification to see if perhaps they were affecting the read/unread status; but it didn't seem to make any difference).

This is my only gripe with Choqok....apart from not being able to easily tell which messages I've seen before, I love the app. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

for me, the read messages are shaded - but depending on you color scheme, it can be hard to tell the difference, at least for me

        Thanks claydoh....

I just changed the New status background colour (Settings --> Configure Choqok --> Appearance --> Use custom colours --> New Status colour) to bright yellow, but new messages are still showing with a gray background.

So I think there's a problem with the way it's handling read/unread. I still don't get a tooltip when my mouse is over the system tray icon, which makes me think that it's automatically marking new messages as read as they arrive?

I am unaware of the tooltip function, never seen one myself, though the icon shows the number of tweets. closing the window or clicking the tray icon to minimize does mark all as read for me. lately, though it seems to take a long time for twitter to update, sometimes minutes. identi.ca is much quicker
