Strange software install problems in Jaunty

Got the Ubuntu version to work great. Figured I'd try the KDE version too, and have all sorts of weirdness with installing software. I loaded the 64bit version on a pretty snappy machine.

Every time I try to install ANYTHING , the installer says that I can only "run one installer at a time", even thought thats what I'm doing .... Or, I get "a package dependency could not......blah", and it refers to sun-java6-jre... which is a massive trainwreck in its own right!

Pretty weird. This error message usually represents a state where aptitude is loaded in memory and has a handle reserved, and if you try to run something else, it gets heartburn. But even with a clean boot, I get that message.

Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Gonna try a fresh re-install of the whole shebang, to see if I can reproduce it, or maybe I did something wrong the first time.. Certainly Sun Java JRE does NOT like to install at all with KDE running. I had no problems with Gnome running

That's all very weird -- I'm thinking "make a new CD", and burn it at 4X speed.

Just a wild guess: your automatic updater has got a lock on the repository archive, preventing you from manually running the software package manager. Do you have a gear in your system tray?

Thanks... I was able to reproduce it. Its a result of trying to install Sun Java JRE.....

Did a fresh install. Brought up the KDE software installer. Went to sun jre and tried to install it. As our friends the lawyers at Sun insist on that stupid legal document that you have to say yes to, the KDE installer (which does not appear to have a verbose mode like the Gnome version) gives an error and bombs out.

It looks like the install script sets some flag somewhere when it upacks, before it actually installs anything, that makes dpkg think its done, but its not, so then you get these weird errors if you try to install it again.

I'm pretty nimble with Gnome and bash/command line stuff, but I have NEVER seen this behavior before with the jerky Sun installer. If I go to use dpkg directly and force the install, it brings the Sun agreement up in a weird window, where I can't say yes or anything.

And GreyGeek, that appears to be what was happening with my initial clean Kubuntu install. But the subsequent installs, its not been the case

mmm... I was able to install java6-sun-jre (1.6.0.13) from the repository using Synaptic without any problems.

I installed java6-sun-jre using sudo apt-get install with no problems. It opened a window to accept the sun terms and continued with the install perfectly.

I was getting quite used to adept in Intrepid but don't like Jaunty's new package manager and have gone back to using the simpler apt-get install.

With packages, you can only have one package manager open - either apt-get OR adept OR synaptic OR some other program that uses the repository.
