Print to PDF in Thunderbird, Firefox and other programs

I just realised that I did not have any way to make a PDF from Thunderbird today. From Kmail and other KDE programs, there is a PDF option when you want to print. But this does not exist in Thunderbird. So after a bit of searching and some chatting in irc, this is what I ended up doing. If anyone know a better way, please let me know.

First add the cups-pdf package using your favourite way of adding packages.

Then go to http://localhost:631 in your web browser.

    Click on the Administration tab

    Choose Add printer

The name can not have spaces or special characters. I chose "PDF" as name.

Location - I just put "Local driver".

In description I put "Print to PDF"

After clicking on Continue, you have to choose device. Here you should have CUPS-PDF (Virtual PDF printer) as an option. Choose that and click on Continue.

Next you have to choose a make/manufacturer for your printer. Just pick "Generic" and click continue.

The last thing you have to do is to pick a model/driver for your PDF printer. I am using "Generic Postscript printer foomatic....." and it works fine.

You might have to enter your usual username/password (or another one that has sudo rights) and your printer should be set up.

Now, you are able to choose the PDF printer in any application that can print. BUT - I could not find the pdf's anywhere. So after another round of searching, it turns out that CUPS-PDF saves the files in a folder called PDF in your home folder. So I made a folder called PDF (all capitals) and everything is working fine now :-)

Edit: One small snag - CUPS-PDF uses the name of the document as the name of the file. So if you print two documents that have the same name (I printed two e-mails with ticket confirmations and they both had the same subject...) the last one will overwrite the first. So remember to move the PDF's out of the PDF folder after printing.

Like I said - if anyone knows a better way, let me know. I actually think this should be in Kubuntu as default.
