Re: Kde 4.3 beta 1 PPA

Problem is that is not good adjusted migration from 4.2 to 4.3. Many things were changed, eg. plasma -> plasma-desktop, some files were moved between packages, some packages renamed, removed or splitted, configuration files were changed. And packages for jaunty are not fully ready for this.
    Kubuntu 12.04 64bit

Re: Kde 4.3 beta 1 PPA

I see a lot of confusion here about the KDE 4.3 beta and the Kubuntu packages. Kubuntu's experimental PPA is NOT the KDE 4.3 beta. It is a build of the KDE 4.3 beta *for* Ubuntu. The KDE 4.3 beta did have testing before it was released, and does work. So far almost all the problems I've seen listed here are Kubuntu/Ubuntu package problems that are completely unrelated to the KDE 4.3 beta release and it is up to the package team to fix. It's not kde.org's job to test Kubuntu ppa packages.

Its an experimental kubuntu ppa, of course its going to have package problems.

I agree with you crweb, the problem is that wasn't communicated very well in the announcement. It was described as the "KDE 4.3 beta."

I think there needs to be a way to accurately communicate that this is an "alpha implementation" of a beta release to let people know they're playing with fire.

I did finally get it to install following the directions in this thread. Once installed it's very nice, as long as you don't use the folder view widget.

I wouldn't think that would be so... anyone savvy enough to add the ppa should know enough about how things are released and packaged. That said, perhaps they should rename ~experimental: "eat-your-babies-release".

But when something is added to the front page of the kubuntu.org site it doesn't matter whether or not someone is savvy enough to look for the ppa -- the line to add to your sources.list file is listed right there on the front page. And despite the fact that they've taken it down now, it was listed there for a few days. That's how I found out about it.

There should be a better way to announce such things. I agree.

I've been thinking about this whole issue a little more, and I think part of the reason why experienced and new users think it is ok to add a repo titled "experimental" is that linux users are constantly being "told" that linux is a fringe, buggy (drivers), unsupported OS, by Microsoft, Apple, hardware OEMs, etc., and so when something is labeled "experimental", your gut reaction is just, "Well, so what, the whole OS is 'experimental', so this should be fine." Of course that is not true, but it's hard to know the difference between the real betas and the 'it's all beta since it's linux' feeling.
