Same problem here, I ****ed up my old install with this, prolly could have fixed it but decided to do a clean install instead - with a clean install of Kubuntu 9.04 and the KDE 4.3 repository I get the exact same result.. *sigh*

I'm starting to wonder if anyone actually tested this in Jaunty before releasing it.

Re: Kde 4.3 beta 1 PPA

i have fixed it .. i did this by installing via konsole

you need to do the following
            first try
            Code:
            sudo apt-get -f install
then it should tell you what packages you have broken..
so now that you know whats broken we can force its install
            Code:
sudo dpkg --force- -i /var/cache/apt/archives/PACKAGE 1 use 4.2.85 version.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/PACKAGE 2 use 4.2.85 version.deb and so on if you have more then that
            then try to upgrade again
            Code:
             sudo apt-get upgrade
you should most of the packages upgraded then have to do this all over again from the top.keep doing that untill you have all packages updated then you will have to manually install the ones "left behind"
            Code:
            sudo apt-get install package1 package2 etc
you may have to force more packages to install after you do this so go back to the top again untill done.

            you might see something like
            can't install error
            libkdepim4
            libkdepim4
            libsomething else
if you do just install the files listed (remove dupes if any) sudo apt-get install package1 package2 etc , remember
when its all done you should be able to restart kdm and have a fully working kde 4.3 beta (i had to move my panel widgets they were all centered on my panel)

            good luck

you need to do the following...
Thanks for the info. I had to cycle through dpkg --force- -i, apt-get upgrade, apt-get install -f, dpkg --configure -a a half-dozen times to get as much of it installed and configured as possible. I'm hoping I didn't cause more harm than good.

My last apt-get upgrade attempt gives me:

The following packages have been kept back:
              kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data kfilereplace klinkstatus
              kommander konqueror kopete superkaramba
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 8 not upgraded.
Seeing kdebase-workspace-bin and kdebase-workspace-data in that list makes me a bit nervous. Should I be concerned?

UPDATE: Synaptic gave me the option of upgrading the above packages, but I ran into some problems in doing so. Had to do the dpkg --force- i again on those packages followed by apt-get install -f, dpkg --configure -a, etc. I think I may finally have it all good to go now, but I did lose Quanta in the process since it has older dependencies.

Re: Kde 4.3 beta 1 PPA

I'm personally just gonna wait for them to fix the packages, I'm afraid that if I make it work through modifications I'll have trouble upgrading again in the future.

Seems to be working well for me, albeit a little sluggish compared to 4.2. It definitely has a nicer look to it and some cool new features I'm still uncovering. It's too bad it was such a struggle to upgrade.

Re: Kde 4.3 beta 1 PPA

Yeah, no kidding. I had the same repo issue here. Apparently it hadn't all synced yet, and when I did another apt-get update, it showed more packages that had just hit the server.

I did end up manually forcing all packages to install (and a forced dist-upgrade), and met so many broken packages... I did not attempt dpkg --configure -a. What does that do? Won't it configure everything itself after the dpkg -i --force-all and retrying the dist-upgrade -f?

When I loaded 'er up I immediately got an error that the klipperrc file was unwritable. I went to the config folder and made everything in it writable to all users, and that made that error go away... but there are tons of other problems: the lcd weather app is broken for St. Paul via National Weather station, I don't get any trace of the "peek into folders" features from the folder view widget, etc...

And it didn't come with the new Air theme shown in the release announcement either. I had to download that myself via "get more themes" in desktop options.

                      Is my install *&#^(*@#^$(*&^#'ed up?

                      edit:
And...**** hits the fan as more packages hit the repos. XD Just now I get 20MB worth of new KDE updates. Fingers are crossed.

Um, using the , ahem, experimental repo is how it gets tested in jaunty
Once the beta progresses to rc and final, the packages will be moved to the updates ppa

                          I got around the problem with a combination of using ;

                          sudo dpkg --configure -a
                          sudo apt-get -f upgrade
                          sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade

I must admit 4.3 has more than doubled my ATI glxgears figures.

Here too ... The apt-get update was complaining about "NO_PUBLICKEY 2836CB0A8AC93F7A". So, I've add by command:
                              gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv 2836CB0A8AC93F7A
                              gpg --export --armor 2836CB0A8AC93F7A | sudo apt-key add -
and then apt-get update goes fine, but when to upgrade, it asked to remove a kde-?something? and nothing to remove it. Neither by --remove or --purge options. And of course, nothing to upgrade neither.

And screw up all my KDE installation...
